Free Frank McWorter and the New Philadelphia town legacy

Francis Free Frank McWorter born 1777 built the first Black man founded town. He platted New Philadelphia in 1836 to fund family freedom, selling 144 lots on an 80 acre tract in Pike County Illinois. His efforts paid for multiple family members to gain liberty and the town faded after railroad bypass in 1869. Today preservation groups seek to re create and restore the site and cemetery with university partnership.
