Mexican and U S researchers compared 234 gastric cancer cases with 468 controls and found the highest cancer risk among those consuming the most capsaicin from chili peppers. The study aims to explain why gastric cancer rates fall elsewhere but not in Mexico.
A JAMA study led by Dr. Jeffrey Linder shows physicians prescribed antibiotics for sore throats 73 percent of the time from 1989 to 1999 though bacteria cause only about 10 percent of cases. Overuse fuels resistance and newer antibiotics are used when older penicillin would work, experts say.
Dr. North and colleagues say 68 percent of prescriptions for sore throats are non-recommended. Overusing penicillin and other frontline drugs risks resistance. They urge patient education and alternatives such as saltwater gargles, Tylenol, rest, fluids, no smoking, and humidifiers.
An ophthalmologist suggested 210 IU daily total from ICAPS and a multivitamin. The guidance notes 400 IU is common and generally safe, with natural and synthetic forms differing in bioavailability. It warns about bleeding risks with anticoagulants and herb interactions, and explains IU to mg conversions and label terms.
