Powell urges Israel to widen Arafat access to aid peace talks
Secretary of State Colin Powell welcomed Israel's withdrawal from Nablus Jenin and Ramallah and urged broader access for Yasser Arafat to improve peacemaking. He said Israel should continue troop withdrawals until no doubt remains, and noted U S aid including tents water purification and medical supplies for the West Bank. Powell, returning from the Middle East, said Washington will monitor legality of U S weapons use and dismissed any immediate Carter or Clinton role, while stressing Arafat must choose peace.
