Charles Koen a former Black Liberator leader in St Louis aged 23 received six months in jail and a $160 fine after a fight with St Louis police last year. Koen plans to appeal while his aide James Chairs says Koen was shot at in Cairo by rivals.

Mississippi flood crest pushes southward, widening risk
The Mississippi River crest moved south toward Iowa Illinois and Missouri as floodwaters surged further north abated. Iowa and Illinois towns mobilized all residents including students to shore up dikes while North Dakota residents evacuated and prepared for continued rises near Pembina and Minot. In St Louis the crest promises two feet above flood stage with extensive damage possible downstream. Quad Cities towns and Andalusia mobilized to reinforce mid Mississippi dikes ahead of the crest expected next week.

Three Die in Laclede Steel Plant Flash Fire
A Monday evening flash fire at the Laclede Steel Co. continuous casting section killed three men, Harold E. Bostick 32 of Bunker Hill, Nolan McKelvey 28 of Alten, and Morris L. Chandler 48 of Carlinville. The fatalities occurred at Barnes Hospital in St Louis after the blaze.
