Illinois senator lobbies Washington for coal program

State Senator Kenneth Buzbee and Illinois Energy Resources Commission chair Sen. John Nimrod pushed a six point coal plan in Washington tied to the Clean Air Act reauthorization. They seek to relax administration rather than ambient standards, notably removing Class II and III distinctions to allow plant expansion with best available control tech. They call for lower sulfur dioxide targets, increased coal cleaning research, longer postconstruction emission regulation moratorium, and tax incentives for cleaning coal.

Environmental group splits on Illinois air rules stance

Kevin Green of Citizens for a Better Environment says the group supports some proposals from the Illinois Energy Resources Commission, including tax incentives and more coal cleaning research, and a 10 year moratorium on strict new plant rules, but opposes key recommendations such as preserving prevention of significant air quality deterioration and relaxing the 90 percent sulfur reduction for new plants using high sulfur coal. The group calls for funding to retrofit plants like Baldwin and urges government loans to protect Illinois coal interests while backing continued research.
