Labor must clean house says Reuther at UAW

Walter Reuther urged UAW delegates in Atlantic City to root out corruption and racketeers within labor or risk enemies taking over. He warned that reactionaries would not use a broom but an ax and called for purging crooks while championing higher dues and changes to bargaining. Rattlesnake Roundup in Oklahoma Falls Short

In Okeene Oklahoma a three day rattlesnake roundup drew 15 000 visitors though the chilly storm cut the catch to 987 far below the usual 2 500. The longest snake hit 72 inches. hunter H H Tomlinson earned 32 50. One new member joined the Order of the White Fang after a bite incident involving 17 year old Eldon Martin.

Paris reports Air France DC3 crashed at Biskra Algeria, killing 32 aboard. Biskra oasis town of 36,000 located 175 miles southeast of Algiers in the Aures Mountains. Plane had stopped there on a Touggourt to Algiers flight and crashed during or after takeoff.

Trailer Hits School Bus Near Michigan City

A semi-trailer broke loose and collided head on with a parochial school bus on U S 421 five miles south of Michigan City Indiana. The bus driver Emil Michaels 60 was killed and 12 students injured three seriously Donald Heiden 6 was listed in critical condition with possible internal injuries Eleven other pupils were in good condition and about 23 escaped injury at St. Anthony s hospital The state police reported the crash occurred as the trailer and bus met on the highway.

Suspect Scheduled for California Trip in Larceny Case

Robert McMullen, 29, of Huntington Park, California, held in Franklin County jail since March 12, was ordered to return to Los Angeles to face grand larceny charges. Deputies say he was arrested on a bad check and found in possession of a rented automobile taken from California without authorization. He has since made restitution in the check case. Extradition papers were signed by Illinois Governor William Stratton.

Two men escape serious injury in Rt 144 car flip

Wilbert Coleman 32 of Percy and Rayburn Eaton of Cutler escaped serious injury when their car overturned on Rt 144 seven miles west of Murphysboro near Kinkaid Hill about 3 am Sunday. Deputy Arch Edwards said the vehicle hit a guard rail and rolled. The men were not admitted to a hospital.

Marion Woman Drops Charge On Husband

A Marion woman withdrew a charge of assault with intent to murder against her husband after telling officers he broke into their home and attacked her with his fist while holding a knife. Wreck blocks Rock Island line in Iowa collision

A Burlington local freight collided with a Rock Island fast freight near Centerville Iowa. The main Davenport to Kansas City line was blocked by wreckage and the Burlington engineer and fireman were injured.

Sheriff Dan Parker Killed In High Speed Chase Crash

Clinton County Sheriff Dan Parker, 57, died in a two car crash four miles west of Carlyle during a high speed chase. Deputy Dale Quick, 32, suffered two broken legs. James Rohling, 41, was in fair condition. The theft suspect Orville K Sanders, an AWOL soldier from Ohio, fled on foot and was later found in a barn. Parker had served as sheriff for three years and deputy for seven. Coroner Louis Hever will oversee the temporary succession.
