The Grammys shrink more than 30 categories in a sweeping 53 year overhaul. Head to head competition replaces exotic awards like Native American album and spoken word children’s record. Neil Portnow says the move raises the bar while preserving esteem in the creative community.
The awards plan to drop several categories including rap performance by a duo or group, some instrumental pop rock country gospel kids spoken word Zydeco Cajun and best classical crossover. The change aims to streamline the event while preserving key honors.
Portnow announced changes tightening the awards process with a higher bar for eligibility. Separate male and female vocal categories in pop R B and country will be dropped, shifting competition into larger fields.
Portnow defends changes to Grammys saying great singers transcend gender while adding that reforms will hurt niche genres. New rules push regional roots into a broader category and require 40 entries per category or reduce nominations to three for mid range groups. Tia Carrere faces fewer chances in Hawaiian music but may fit new regional roots category.
