The 25th annual Williamson County Spelling Bee at Washington School Johnston City on February 25 named champions for grades five through eight. Karissa Fernandez of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Herrin won seventh grade, Laura O'Dell Herrin Middle School captured eighth grade, with runners-up Alex Martin Marion and Caitlin Long Marion junior high.

Murphysboro high school students will man tag day at intersections to raise money for SeniorFest 2003 a drug and alcohol free all nighter at Southern Illinois University Carbondale Recreation Center planned for June 6. Barbecued roasts go on sale April 19 and raffles offer four field level Cardinals seats and Cards Cubs game tickets with prizes donated by local supporters.
