Underground forest thrives in Idaho mine tunnels
Wardner Idaho AP thousands of tiny trees grow in a sunless 3000 foot underground greenhouse in the Bunker Hill mine. Supervisor Ed Pommerenning built the facility six years ago to reforest denuded hills with 400 square feet expanding to 400 square feet allow 400000 trees yearly. Greenhouse staffer Vick Spohr uses recordings and occasional singing to acclimate saplings to surface conditions with a 95 percent survival rate after transplantation.
