Plan to let illegal immigrants get a license fails in House
The Illinois House rejected a proposal to let undocumented immigrants obtain state driver licenses in a 68 to 43 vote. Rep. Edward Acevedo argued it would curb the black market for fake IDs and improve road safety, while opponents led by Rep. Mary Flowers said it would reward illegal behavior. The measure would require foreign documents, a passport or birth certificate, a taxpayer ID, an affidavit to apply for permanent residency, proof of insurance within 30 days, and fingerprints. it would cost about 14.6 million in six months and 15.7 million annually. The bill’s sponsor said support would continue next year. Other actions included decoupling Illinois from federal overtime rules and several House votes on civil actions and domestic abuse penalties.
