In a June 7 1918 missive from France Corporal J H Carver writes of market treats strawberries and cherries, milk and sugar, and fine weather. He notes rising early, good health, and his promotion to corporal while sending love to Grandma and family.
A World War I diary excerpt to a father and mother details daily labor from 4:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. and a Memorial Day visit with Ivan Rose. The writer notes fences in France, stock similar to Herefords, tobacco supplies, and longing for home. He describes trains, front-line morale, and optimism about returning to homesteads.
The article describes a meat shortage in England with bones sold at five pounds for one shilling while queues form for small food portions. It contrasts English hardship with America’s abundance, notes long coal lines and elaborate shop displays, and quotes letters from servicemen and observers abroad. It mentions official images from London and local farm visits, plus snippets from Oregon agricultural extension efforts.
Daniel Giles a pioneer of Coos County born September 1836 in Bloody Run Pennsylvania crossed the plains in 1852 and settled in Coos County by 1853. He fought in the 1855 56 Indian wars helped bring first wagon and threshing and mowing machines to the area and brought Honorable Binger Hermann into politics. He left a large family and was active in the LDS church and Masonic lodge. Funeral services were held Friday with many attendees as local businesses closed.
Red Cross workers notified of a pajama cloth shipment now at the Red Cross rooms awaiting use. All Red Cross volunteers urged to prepare for upcoming needed supplies. Local distributors Berry and Schroede are noted in Oregon context.

Beyers and son Lloyd of Marshfield visit relatives here. J. D. Barklow and family return from an extended motor trip. Elmer Billings took a job at Lakeside, leaving Tuesday via Marshfield. Dora Harrison, recently operated on, is home visiting relatives while recuperating.
