Joe G. Dominates Oakland Meet Under Hobson Ownership

Joe G. owned by Jim Hobson of Myrtle Point swept all three races at the Oakland two day meet July 3 4 earning $200 in the Gobblers one mile special and $250 in the mile derby. Hobson plans to race the horses at the Coos and Curry County Fair Meet in September.

Family Reunion at Bandon Lights Up Coos County

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Young and son Francis hosted a reunion in Bandon with M. M. Young, Mrs. Ella Young and Miss Addie Young of Seattle, Ed Otis of Spokane guests for the summer in Coos county. Ray Reunion Near Empire Brings 130 To Celebrate Fourth

A large canopy, wind break, tents and tables hosted the Ray reunion near Empire drawing about 130 attendees from Kansas, Iowa, the north and the south. The Fourth was celebrated with a Hale Brothers piano, 50 old songs, Calithumpian band of about 40, and varied programs including addresses and solos. Lee and Mollie Ray families connected for the first time in years as old residents returned for the gathering.

The Band will hold its business and practice meeting at City Hall on Tuesday evening. Any who wish to join the band will be admitted.

Fourth Has Usual Toll of Accidents in Celebration

Across the nation the Fourth of July brings a familiar toll of fatalities and injuries. In Myrtle Point several auto crashes occurred with Ed Porterfield and Gladys Storey among the injured after a collision near the east edge of town. Storey faces charges for reckless driving and driving without a license. Another crash on Garrett hill left Jack McKenzie seriously hurt but likely to recover. In Coquille Ray Goodrich’s collision with Frank Helman’s car left a woman badly hurt.

Junior Chautauqua Opens With Town Organization

Junior Chautauqua leader Claramary Smith arrived Monday and organized Junior Town for the week. Jay Schriefer named mayor Carolyn Schneider clerk Robert Clarke chief of police Margaret Chave commissioner with assistants Jean Presser and J Ann Parrott Roderick Barklow service commissioner aided by Claud Pressler Velene Bowers and Delbert Steele A code of law was adopted and Saturday will reveal the town’s progress.

Miller breaks leg in Fourth of July colt accident

Carl Miller of Curry County sustained a broken left leg below the knee when an unruly colt ran into a fence on the Fourth. He is confined at Mast Hospital.

Simms Named to State Livestock Board

On Tuesday Governor Pierce appointed Dr. B. T. Simms of Corvallis a member of the state livestock sanitary board. E. G. Hopson of Portland and W. B. Dennis of Carlton were reappointed to the state board of engineer examiners.

Cutworms Threaten Coquillic Crops Across Valley

In the Coquilic valley cutworms damage cabbage broccoli and tomatoes threatening thousands of dollars in crops. Mr Chase of the Hot-Chase Cannery Co provides a control formula mixing bran Paris Green salt syrup and warm water to make an eight mash and warns to keep poultry away as they will kill the worms.

County bonds set for July 20 election details

Judge Mast announced a county bond election for 980000 to fund two measures. One 280000 to repay state road funds and 700000 for road projects including 300000 for a bridge linking Coos River Road with Marshfield. Petition forms have been sent to Portland attorneys for review before the election is called.

Robert L Weekly Dies After Logging Camp Accident

Robert L Weekly, 60, died about 11 PM after a logging accident at Bridge. He was struck by a log while assisting unloading, suffered serious injuries, and died in Myrtle Point. Born July 27 1864 in Douglas County Oregon, he moved to Coos County in 1873 and married Mary P Bright in 1867. He leaves ten children and a funeral is planned with interment in Dora cemetery.

The ODED Fourth Celebration Rodeo Feature

Crowds filled grandstands as local riders and animals provided thrills. Rodeo officials L. H Pearce and Ellis Dement praised the event with Myrtle Point band playing between rides. Winners included W. A. Zachery first and L. Rice second in an American style chariot race. Schiller Phillips topped George King and Ellis Dement in final results.

Thye Defeats Grant in Portland Wrestling Match

The Portland wrestler Ted Thye beat Sam Grant of Spokane in two falls. Thye won the first fall in 23 minutes and the second in four minutes with his wristlock hold. Cal King served as referee.

The local band, having practiced in City Hall and marched through streets, received widespread praise for their Fourth of July concert. Residents noted real music, good time and rhythm, and expressed pride in the band’s progress and performance.
