Drowned in River Near Coquille Bridge

Harold Ashton, 20? working with his father on rafting contracts for E. E. Johnson mill, drowned last Monday noon when his canoe overturned on the Coquille river. His father’s boat was nearby but the body surfaced only after about fifteen minutes of search.

Memorial for Robert H. Wise Diminishes with Time and Faith

Robert H. Wise died at age 24 8 months 4 days from a log blow on July 25 1923 near Powers Oregon. He was a Powers High School graduate and worked as a logger to save for college. Services at the home ranch were conducted with Powers band assisting and burial there. He leaves his parents Grace Carlisle nurse at Myrtle Point Mrs Milton Epperson at the ranch and several siblings and relatives.

Coquille quits the county league citing funding difficulties for her ball team. There is talk of asking Roseburg to finish the season with any Coquille players needed. With poor pay from the Willamette valley league a serious consideration of continuing is suggested.

Governor appoints tax supervising and conservative commissioners

Governor Pieres named 23 of 36 county tax commissioners this week under the new law. He urged retrenchment and new revenue sources to ease the tax burden. A Salem meeting of all appointees is planned for early fall to study Oregon taxation. Coos county appointees include F. S. Schroeder Myrtle Point Walter Donald Bandon and A. K. Peck Marshfield.
