E. J. Schneider declares as a Republican candidate for county commissioner in Coos County. A longtime resident and former postal official, he promotes development of natural resources, chairs chamber activities, serves on the grammar school board and city council, and seeks broad support across the county.
C E Huling plans to tear down the old windmill frame and cedar tank on the Huling property at Maple and Sixth. T Dickson, who erected the frame and built the tank 26 years ago, finds the cedar tank in as good condition as when first installed. The weakened frame prompted removal. The relic reflects Myrtle Point’s early water-supply era when windmills and tanks provided irrigation water before a system was installed.
H. W Kirk of Cottage Grove and Cora Marie Adams of Marshfield married at the Presbyterian manse Tuesday about 5 o'clock. Rev. Chas. C. Hulet officiated with witnesses E. R. Kenney of Roseburg and Mildred Lannerson of Marshfield.
Funeral services for George W Halter drowned in the Coquille river on his ranch near Arago were held at the Arago church with Elder Tommy Barklow officiating. Burial followed at Norway cemetery. Halter joined the Brethren church about fifteen years ago and his death was attributed to a lingering illness.
Elton Schroeder of Myrtle Point is named to the properties committee for Junior Vod vil, set for May 7 and 8 at the University of Oregon Eugene. Ralph Staley of Portland oversees about 75 students as general director of the event preparations.
Tenants in the George True building at Spruce and Fifth streets were told to vacate within 30 days. A barber shop pool hall and lunch counter are planned for the site, with a possible new building to be erected this summer if repairs prove too costly.
A large logging contract for timber on Big Creek remains unsettled between local parties. The sub contract could close soon or later by other groups, signaling major impact for Bridge and Myrtle Point. The project spans about four years with a payroll near five thousand dollars monthly.
Miss Helen Whitaker daughter of Mr and Mrs J S Whitaker a teacher of English at Union High School will leave Myrtle Point after the school year to attend the Presbyterian Board conference in New York City June 2 12 to receive instruction for foreign missions She has signed to teach in a Presbyterian mission school in Hunan China for four years teaching Chinese girls in an English speaking school After four years a one year vacation with full pay returns home then sails to China Miss Whitaker who has lived in Myrtle Point most of her life looks forward to the experience and will be greatly missed socially.
Mayor Ellis Dement hired John Shultus to clear Myrtle Point cemetery by burning dead grass and weeds from driveways and material. Brush and small growth will be grubbed and burned. Many grave marks are rotted and fences dilapidated. Before Decoration Day residents are urged to help cut grass. A tombstone for a Masonic lodge member has never been placed and may be erected by local brothers.
Long time residents say Coos county district shows best prospect yet for grain and fruit. Warm weather and timely rains produced early sprouting and strong growth. Trees are in full bloom and colors are described as georgeous as harvest approaches.
The P T A will hold a regular session next Tuesday evening at eight in the high school auditorium with a Kindness theme. The program includes music by the Bowers trio slides on child labor and animals in the World War selections by the Girls Glee Club a reading by Lila Holloway a talk by Rev. Omer Idso and a business meeting.
W F Neal purchased the W T Ramsay blacksmith shop on Fourth street this week and took charge Monday morning. Merl Poland will handle horses for the new firm. Ramsey built the shop in 1909 and may stay in Myrtle Point to pursue other work.
Sunset Cedar of North Bend takes over Broadbent mill buildings and installs electric machinery to saw cedar. The mill will employ four men after being closed for about four or five months.
Myrtle Point council adopts cement sidewalk phasing along Maple and Spruce areas, warns works must start by April 19, and to sue property owners with city liens. Recorder reports March revenue 1191.13, including dog tax, fines, and water fees, with a noted improvement over prior periods.
A candidate announces pursuit of County Commissioner on the Republican ticket for the May 21 1926 primary. The note also lists names and expenses for various local officials and firms, including power company employees, lawyers, engineers, laborers, and suppliers, with small payment figures.
A Ladies Aid gathering at the Presbyterian manse honored Mrs S C McAllister. Games sparked kid like zest then a program followed by a tokens gift of two pieces of silver from President Mrs Elmer Russell. Mr and Mrs McAllister and their children will move to North Bend later this week.
Wednesday church night drew about sixty five attendees to the social room for supper and services. Reports from most departments were encouraging, though the Christian Endeavor group was seen as not engaging enough youths and missing potential benefits.
J L Barker marks his eighty second birthday with a noon dinner hosted by daughter Mrs Birdie Hazelton at her home for Mr and Mrs Barker and Mr and Mrs R G Dement. He has lived in Coos county for about sixty years.
Carrick, former owner of the Novelty store and now with Dunham grocery, learned Tuesday evening that his mother Mrs. R A Carrick had died in Lucknow Ontario on April first at age eighty three. A sister said wires were down during a heavy snow storm preventing immediate notices to other siblings.
The Christian Endeavorers of the county held a rally in Coquille last Thursday night led by Dallas Rice state field secretary. About seventy five attendees included three carloads from here. Miss Helen Whitaker Myrtle Point resigned as president to go to China next year. Mrs Hasel Jackson Marshfield became president.
A May festival will be held at the high school on April 80 at eight o'clock with solo dances folk dances and May pole winding. The event is in practice now and The American will provide further announcements.
N J Shepherd and wife, new arrivals from Ashland, take charge of the Guerin Café in Myrtle Point Wednesday morning. Shepherd, a former serviceman and globe-trotter, calls Ashland home. Bartlett family plans a move to their Big Creek homestead he recently acquired.
N G Bingham a North Fork rancher near Myrtle Point sustained a crushed hip after a fall at a Western White Cedar logging camp on Rock Creek Wednesday. He was rushed to Keizer Hospital in North Bend for treatment.
Miss Helen Cowgill of Corvallis with Mrs. Mulkey toured Myrtle Point clubs this week visiting Broadbent seven girl club and the Etelka club led by Mrs. Effie Shindell. Cowgill praised the girls as wide awake and doing good work.
All Myrtle Point churches held Easter services with record attendances. Rain the night before did not dampen spirits as many worshiped in town. The High School glee club presented an evening program at the Presbyterian church under Mrs. Ceeley, praised for its inspiring singing.
The Sentinel reports a strong move by teachers to cut graduation expenses at Coquille schools. New dresses for the banquet are discouraged and graduates must use on hand funds. No gifts of flowers or costly remembrances will be received at the school.
The Marshfield chamber of commerce cites a California dealer seeking 50 car loads of Coos County lettuce. He would supply seed and contract 100 acres. Interested growers may contact Earl Murphy, secretary, for full details.

More than 100 entries already received for the national amateur wrestling meet at Oregon Agricultural College Corvallis April 15 17, with as many as 200 expected. Teams from Oklahoma A&M Cornell Ames Princeton Olympic Club of San Francisco Los Angeles Athletic Club Hollywood Athletic Club Real Estate Dealers of Florida University of Oregon Washington State College University of Washington Oregon Aggies Illinois Athletic Club also entered. Reserved seats on sale in multiple cities. Statewide inquiries pour in as about 6 000 fans are anticipated for the three day event. Corvallis civic clubs plan crowd handling and rail discount rates are offered.
Mrs. H C G Van Alstein entertained the Woman's Club of Bridge at her Big Creek home last Friday. During the business session two new members were admitted. A delicate luncheon was served in the afternoon.
The Myrtle Point chamber of commerce plans to promote English walnut trees as the standard street shade tree in Oregon towns. The committee will coordinate with state highway officials to preserve shade along streets while encouraging adoption by other cities.
An accident Monday night between Marshfield and Coquille at Bunker Hill left Miss Flossie Mansel Hamm cafe waitress with a broken collar bone and Al Powrie with facial gashes. The car turned over. exact cause unknown.
Corvallis band lads visiting Myrtle Point cavorted on a huge river log in the Coquille. When the log drifted toward the sea, two locals used a Ford and rope to pull the swimmers to safety. The group also played an automatic orchestra at Hamm cafe, leaving about fifteen dollars in nickels.
At a Marshfield stockholders meeting the Coos Bay Steam Laundry decided to assign all company property to 8 W Lawrence of Portland as trustee.
