A hat buyer paid with a worn ten dollar bill for a $3.50 hat, then a second man described as five eight, brown hair and grey eyes questioned the clerk about the earlier purchaser. The clerk recalled the single prior transaction and the two men may be linked to a counterfeit scheme.
President Roosevelt will attend the dedication ceremony for a new outer drive bridge in Chicago. A Charter Jubilee parade will precede the event with officials and military displays, followed by a brief speech by the president. The parade route runs from 8th Street north on Michigan to Randolph and onto the bridge viaduct.
Peter Anderson aged 45 died from injuries sustained Friday when his car was hit by a truck driven by Marcus Fischer at 73rd street and Indiana avenue. His daughter Lulu remains hospitalized in critical condition. inquest postponed to October 22. Funeral held at St Constantine church. burial at Mt Greenwood. Surviving family includes his widow Amanda and another daughter and a son.
Avalon park in the Southeast community will be dedicated Sunday afternoon as the closing event of the Eighth Ward Charter Jubilee festival. City officials will attend as the ward marks one of its largest celebrations with a parade and community program at Avalon Park school and nearby venues.
Four months of study by the Grand Crossing Chatham Chamber banking committee led by David Skalitzky found the community bank-minded and ripe for a charter. A five member interview panel was formed to pursue charter feasibility with local and outside capital, noting charter grants rest with the Comptroller of the Currency.
The man described as “the smile” is Rev Patrick J McGuire pastor of St Laurence Church. Born in Sligo Ireland fifty seven years ago he is noted for geniality and personal interest in all. He studied at Summerhill Sligo St Charles College Maryland and the Sulpician Seminary Baltimore. Ordained in Chicago in 1906 he served at St Mary Rockford St Mark and Corpus Christi in Chicago and taught at St Xavier College before becoming pastor at St Catherine of Genoa.
The Southeast Economist reports a weekly Lady Bountiful tour distributing cash gifts to ten people. Recipients last Thursday included Margaret Gustafson and several others at addresses around 80th Street. To qualify, obtain a Lady Bountiful coupon from local advertisers, carry it, and present it when approached to receive 5 dollars in cash, with subscribers earning 25 dollars total.

In week two of the Southeast Economist straw vote, supporters of legalization outnumber opponents about six to one, improving from last Thursday’s five to one. The paper invites readers to mail back undecided ballots, affirming or denying legalization, with no signature required.
A public notice urges a straw vote on legalizing gambling. It calls for government supervision of gambling establishments and a substantial license fee, with funds directed to hospitals, libraries, schools, and other public services. It retains a law against legalizing any gambling not already legal.
Residents in the Southeast split over legalization with arguments for strict state control and licensing to curb graft versus opponents led by Rev. Elmer S. Freeman who insists gambling is anti social and should be prevented entirely. The letter also notes widespread illegal gambling and police corruption concerns.
Depositors received cash dividends announced by a local bank as part of earnings distribution. Officials confirmed funds were issued to eligible account holders and stated the payments reflect the bank's financial results for the period.
More than 10 000 depositors and creditors of Bryn Mawr State Bank and Chatham State Bank received about 416 000 in recent dividends declared by receivers. Bryn Mawr paid 5 percent totaling 25 579 45 to roughly 4 000 depositors, plus 21 166 to preferred creditors and 110 550 to bills payable. Chatham paid 5 percent to 6 200 depositors, totaling 46 427 08, with 94 471 67 to bills payable and 117 671 87 to preferred creditors. Funds came from ordinary liquidation and the process continues.
