Puzzle presents two vertical uprights with dashes and requires printing the animal name in the missing letters. Reading across the grid yields perfect words in each across entry. The animal is presented by filling the vertical spaces in the dashes to complete a recognizable creature name.
The tale follows a country brother and city cousin exchanging humorous vacation letters describing golfing at a country club, a beach weekend, and a town visit with games and antics. Louise McGuiggan, age year old daughter of Dr and Mrs John E McGuiggan, won three medals in three straight baton twirling competitions this summer.

The 33 year old former trucking contractor is brother to Mrs. Lawrence Moore of Chappel Avenue and currently serves as motor mechanic for Company H maintaining 29 vehicles. Howard Lappe coastguardsman on the U S S Wakefield has returned home on a 10 day leave from duty. Paul E Nelson son of the P W Nelsons of Merrillave has joined the U S Navy and arrived at Great Lakes training station for a six week primary course in seamanship and naval procedure.
A handsome oil portrait of Rev. George A. Parker, pastor of St. Philip Neri, is on view through October 7 at Mandel brothers galleries. Sister Mary Paul painted it. The feature also notes residents collecting keys, drawings, snapshots, and look alike impersonations including actors Ronald Reagan and Vivien Leigh, with playful impressions by Walter Lipke and others.

Dr. J David Johnston will assume leadership of Woodlawn Lions at a 7 pm installation dinner in the Hayes hotel. Hollywood star Juanita Hansen will speak on The Naration Problem after a music program and skits by Woodlawn Boys club. Lions official Dalton E Cole will preside and Melvin Jones will attend.
Woodlawn police officers spotted Douglas Herbert Jones, 22, backing from a broken tavern window at 624732 Stony Island Ave. He identified himself and admitted parolee status from Pontiac reformatory for burglary. Police found $16 in his pocket. He was ordered held to the grand jury on burglary charges.
Nearly 100 Scout leaders met at Lawn Manor Church to map plans for expanding Boy Scout enrollment in the South Shore district of the Chicago council. The district, spanning from the Chicago River to 138th Street, now serves 4 600 Scouts, with leadership needs at one adult per four youth. Chicago council executive W Arthur McKinney urged expanding volunteer leadership as three of five boys express interest in Scouting, noting age influences on joining. Hyde Gillett highlighted community attitudes toward Scouts as evolving.
Seven year old Elmer Rothbauer of Paxton Avenue died after being struck by a car while crossing 93rd Street. Christ L Jensen of Bennett Avenue was killed in a collision three miles west of Valparaiso while returning from a business trip. Jensen represented a grease company and belonged to Paramount Masonic lodge. he leaves a widow, a daughter Joan Green, and a son Kurt Jensen.
Police pursue two young robbers described as red headed with freckles and a swarthy companion. They staged multiple truck holdups on the Southeast Side last week, forcing drivers to surrender cash and consigning goods to be stolen. Investigations connect Jay Bliss of Oak Park and Walter Banfield of Goldblatt's as victims, with numerous further assaults listed and the pair believed to be the same culprits in other recent robberies.
James W. Ryan announces the annual Christmas boxing benefit of the 7th Ward Democrats will be at 8 39 p m next Monday in the stadium at 76th Street and Euclid Avenue. A varied card of bouts plus other entertainment is planned with William Rand arranging. Henry Lenard is general chairman. Thomas Hughes is program chairman. E J Mitchell and Al Barone handle tickets.
Bernard Sawicki, 19, sits through jury selection for the murder trial in the killing of Park Policeman Charles Speaker, 58, on June 30, with defense portraying him as a disturbed youth shaped by brutal upbringing and the state seeking the death penalty if convicted.

Ed win A. Kuecker, president of a steamship service, warns that restricted foreign trade affects civilians and defense. He notes ships to South Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Australia, and the South Seas, and says Britain and Mediterranean ports are suspended. He cites rapid ship losses and calls for expanded merchant marine capacity and allied delivery of supplies.
Workmen begin clearing the two story Woolworth building at 928 E 68th St after a major fire. A one story replacement will be erected by the chain, in line with lease terms requiring landlord approval. Modernization along 63rd Street proceeds with new fronts and a drug store entrance enhanced and air conditioned. Selz and Southman plan to occupy new real estate offices at 920 E 63rd St around October 1.

Temples and synagogues across the Southeast side will host services and observances.
Nine Southeast side draft boards report quotas totaling 273 for October, double September levels. Local boards nearly all show doubled quotas with Board 13 leading at 38 inductions. September inductions proceed today with 12 men from board No 69, including one volunteer, while lists for boards 12 and 13 anticipate October quotas.
Stephen V. Banksley announced the South Shore Chamber of Commerce will host an annual kibitzer party at 8 pm on Monday October 27 at the Caravel club located at 75th street and Yates. It will be a stag affair with Robert J. O'Donnell serving as president of the organization.
