The Calumet Skyway, Chicago's first toll road, is set to open in March 1958 to relieve Southtown traffic until the South Expressway is finished in 1960. The bridge spans 325 feet over the Calumet river. land purchases and demolition are underway. the expressway from 63rd to 39th is funded mostly by federal dollars with the city county and state sharing the remainder.
The Rev. Morgan L. Williams of Parkside Baptist Church will be honored at a 7 30 p.m. reception marking the 40th anniversary of his ordination in Grand Rapids Mich on September 26 1917. Williams has served as sociologist educator and scientist and has led Christian Education for Michigan Baptists and trained Navy cadets at Ohio Wesleyan University.
At a congregational meeting First Presbyterian Church on E 64th Street and S Kimbark Avenue voted to call a Negro minister and a white minister to serve in dual capacity with equal status. The calls went to Rev Ulysses B Blakeley of Berean Presbyterian Church Philadelphia and Rev Charles T Leber Jr of Dodge Community House Detroit. The church, founded 1833, sits in Woodlawn where Negroes are over 75 percent of the population and 1 000 member congregation includes 100 Negroes. Dr Harold L Bowman retiring Oct 15 after 24 years praised the decision as fellowship without racial distinction. Leber, 35, Hamilton College and Princeton Theological Seminary graduate, has pastored Irvington NY and led Dodge Community House Detroit for three years. He is married with three children.
The Women's Auxiliary of Woodlawn Hospital will start its 22nd season at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the parish hall of St. Mark's Lutheran Church at East 88th Street and South Langley Avenue. Emma Rand will present guest artist Dorothy Wherry in an illustrated program Hate Heroines and History. Gift shop report and tea arrangements are planned, with social chairs and a president named among the involved members.
Fifty tons of Danish blue cheese arrived in Calumet Harbor this week aboard the Swedish American ship Borgholm. The vessel will depart Tuesday with 800 cases of whiskey for U S forces in Germany and marshmallows and canned foods. J Witkinson Jr., operating manager of Furness Withy & Company Ltd., agents for the Swedish American Line, said the Norderholm left Friday and stopped at Inland Steel in Indiana Harbor to pick up 300 tons of tinplate.
Beth Am synagogue begins its ten year history by observing the High Holy Days in its own building at South Shore Drive and South Coles. Only members may attend due to limited space this year. services were previously held at Rockefeller Chapel on the University of Chicago campus with guests invited. Rosh Hashanah services are set for 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 30 a.m. Thursday.
