Four Boards Call 49 Men This Week Induction lists

Forty nine men from four Southeast side draft boards Nos. 10 15 93 and 94 join the September quota with all names published. Board No 10 adds fourteen inductees including Andrew Theisen Charles Stimac Aaron Pollock James Gemino Jr Donald McCann Norbert Melchior Arthur Champan and Julian Vandemoortel plus others. Board No 15 reports twelve men with two Olson brothers among them and six 21 year olds. Board No 93 lists brothers Edward and Joseph Bugajski and eight others.

Three 8th Ward Men on GOP Judicial Ticket

Political veterans eyed the Republican judicial convention slate for the Superior court bench with three 8th ward nominees Ald Roy E sel William E Helander and Elmer Walsh. Alderman Olin, 8241 Maryland av, serves his first City council term and supports major local projects such as widening Stony Island. Helander, 7944 Langley dv, previously spent 12 years on the Municipal court and was rated exceptionally well qualified in 1940. Walsh, 7707 Bennett av, admitted to the bar in 1924 and holds multiple civic roles including president of the Holy Name society at Our Lady of Peace church.

Walter J Riley Named South Shore Red Cross Head

Walter J Riley, president of South Shore National Bank, was named general chairman of the South Shore Red Cross by James B Forgan. Riley has lived in the area about 20 years and will oversee membership drives, surgical dressings for the armed forces, relief supplies for refugees, Braille reading material, home nursing classes, and nutrition efforts.

Enveloped By Flames From Stove Victim in kerosene accident

Christine Svendsen 55 died eight hours after an explosion in her basement at 7810 St. Lawrence Ave. She poured kerosene into a burner, bail water, and was engulfed in flames. Coroner ruled accidental death. Survived by husband Anton and daughter Lillian. Funeral held at 1400 E 72nd St chapel. Burial Cedar Park cemetery.

New Precinct Map Increases Chicago Totals To 3790

The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners added twelve precincts on the Southeast side forming a total of 345 in four wards. Redistricting follows heavy November presidential votes with about 400 voters per precinct intended. 6th ward shows 93 in 1940 rising to 95 in 1941. 7th ward 161 to 102. 8th ward 94 to 88. 10th ward 55 to 60.

Lone Gunman Robs Loan Office at Noon

A lone gunman robbed Household Finance at 9204 Commercial Ave noon yesterday, taking 168 dollars. Manager Morris Murphy of Crete reported the bandit entered, demanded a scan, forced a path through the office, and fled after rifling the cash drawer while staff and three customers remained unaware.

Woodlawn and Chatham Lions Meet at Noon Today

Woodlawn Lions gather at the Hayes hotel to view a news print production film and hear a brief talk by attorney Homer L Davenport. Chatham Lions meet at the Grove restaurant to discuss club service as the new term begins. The clubs plan to supply 4900 bottles of milk for needy children and provide eyeglasses through Hirsch High School recommendations.

Three Fatal Accidents Claim Southeast Side Residents

Last week three separate crashes killed two Southeast side men and a pioneer woman. Anna McCarthy, 70, of 7048 Danteave, died Saturday after a vehicle struck her at 71st Street and Greenwood. Stanley Cilkowski, 67, of 8913 Muskegon Ave., a retired rail yard foreman, died Monday from injuries at 90th Street and South Chicago Avenue after a crash involving a car driven by Martin Greenston. Trifon Sellas, 40, of 6133 Drexel Ave., a milk truck driver, was crushed when his truck overturned at 73rd and State streets around 4:30 a.m. Friday. his widow Sophie and three daughters survived. Authorities cited no witnesses for the Sellas crash, and inquests cleared Charles Stratton, driver in McCarthy’s fatal collision. Burial and services followed for all three victims.

Albert Porter Found Dead in Jackson Park

A coroner's jury ruled Albert C Porter 37 died by his own hand in Jackson Park. He was found shot Tuesday at 11 15 a m near Wooded Island by a passerby with a revolver beside the body and a note directing a friend be notified. He resided at 1532 East 67th Place.
