Dawn broke over 69th street and Crandon avenue when five revolver shots rattled the area. Citizens called Woodlawn police but detectives found no bodies or shooter and returned, leaving the case unsolved.
Steel industry employment rose ten percent from 1929 with average hourly wages up three cents. July payroll reached 514100 workers at 67.3 cents per hour. September air travel shows 23 percent higher business than August and 36 percent higher year on year. New York port revenue for year to Aug 31 stood at 12463521, up 54 percent year over year with net income 2806457, up 154 percent. Diamond Shoe declares Oct 1 dividend. common 50 cents, prior 25 cents. preferred 1.6214.
Saturday marks the first of two days to register at polls ahead of the November 3 election in Chicago. The measure requires permanent records on file in City Hall room 308 by October 6, or citizens lose voting rights for president and local offices. The rush is expected to strain precinct facilities as election board officials urge timely action.
First edition of the Southeast Economist arrives in 44,397 homes and will be distributed every Thursday by 161 carriers. Published by William H. McDonnell, sister to Southtown Economist, it serves Englewood Auburn Park Gresham Ogden Hill and Chicago Lawn area with offices at 1715 E. 71st St.
Ground breaking occurred Monday for a two story Sears Roebuck annex at 79th Street and Kenwood Avenue. The 15000 square foot addition, costing about 19Fann Pizcon,vau, enlarges existing departments with air conditioning and new entry. Major upgrades include mens and boys furnishings, shoe, womens wear, hosiery, lingerie, yard goods, and infant wear with one of the citys largest womens wear sections.
Police continue search for two husky bandits who held up Frank Cummings a 50 year old real estate collector at 10710 Avenue. They forced him into a car and drove through the neighborhood taking $475 in proceeds from collections before forcing him out at 95th street and Colfax.
At 88th street and Stony Island avenue a collision left 11 year old Hail Hickman with bruises and scratches and Oscar Johnson 30 of Harvey Illinois hurt as his car struck Hickman's vehicle causing it to overturn. The younger driver was uninvited to the scene.
Ten-year-old Steve Emody riding a bicycle collided with a westbound car driven by Mike Gulick on Woodlawn Avenue. The boy sustained bruises in the Monday morning incident.
Injuries from a triple automobile crash prove fatal for Jerome Salz and Dr. Milton Given. In other incidents, two burglars escaped with tools from a shop, a purse snatching occurred on 56th Street, a room rental thief stole a handbag, and five year old Donald Kronberg was struck by a car, suffering arm and shoulder injuries.
One hundred sixty one boys in the Southeast side are now in business for themselves as paper carriers of the Southeast Economist. An alert young deliverer brings the paper to homes early each Thursday morning, forming a new community circulation of 161 carrier boys.
The Southeast Economist pledges to serve the community by running weekly advertisements from local stores and delivering broad community news. A dedicated reporting staff will publish timely local events, people, institutions, and photographs each Thursday, emphasizing resident welfare.
John T Diake, former star at Bosta Jiagh, Purdue fullback, shows improved condition after burns from Lafayette Indiana locker room explosion Saturday. One player died and four were burned. Diake known locally from Bowen days as an all city full back.
