Brass Band Clue from 1893 Puzzles in Mendota Journal
A tidbit unearthed by the Illinois Writers' project notes that ads in a Mendota journal from 1893 promise three adults in a family, all washing sent away, three afternoons free, and brass bands heard from the back porch. The puzzle answer explains the wine to water ratio as seven eighteenth total wine and eleven eighteenth water.

John Bathum Called for Marine Duty on Sept. 20
Lieutenant John Bathum longtime Jackson Park supervisor and commander of Company A Ninth Reserve Battalion leaves the Southeast side September 20 for Norfolk Virginia to entrain for duty. A veteran of the Texas border punitive expedition and World War I he helped organize a local reserve corps drawing 69 youths into four year terms. He and his wife Nelle reside at 6612 Ellis Ave and are active in civic life.

Drowning of Jean Fraine After Sailboat Capsizes
Coastguards search for 22 year old Jean Fraine as four young people sail on a 21 foot boat named Dolphin. A sudden Lake Michigan squall capsized the craft near 39th street, throwing Fraine into the water. the others survived by clinging to the hull.

Beach Tavern Looted by Trio in Midnight Hold Up
Three hatless bandits entered Beach Club tavern at 2701 East 75th Street after midnight with guns drawn. They forced patrons to group in the rear and fled with 1042 dollars in cash and jewelry. Victims listed losses from 2 to 325 dollars, including rings and cash. Police describe ages 25 to 35, with one armed pair and one unarmed lookout.

Willkie to Tour Chicago South Side with Four Speeches
Republican presidential hopeful Wendell L. Willkie will conduct a whirlwind Chicago South Side tour tomorrow, delivering four rallies including a 3:45 pm meeting at 88th Street and Baltimore Avenue near Carnegie-Illinois Steel. He will also address stockyards workers, West Side industrial workers, and a 6 pm Negro rally at Giants Ballpark. The fleet of about 45 cars will traverse a lengthy route through Washington Park, Midway, Cottage Grove, Yates, Coles, Commercial avenues, and 86th Street before returning to South Chicago for a ball park rally after which a Stevens Hotel dinner closes the day. The Union Station arrival is at 8:30 am from Rushville Ind. and staging venues include the Livestock Exchange building and Western Electric plant.

Five Thousand Volts Do Not Kill Man in Street Substation
James Wilson a 50 year old city electrician was shocked by 5000 volts while repairing a street lighting circuit at Wentworth and Addison. He remained conscious after the arc as his elbow touched a live wire and fellow worker Robert Wagner pulled him away. He was rushed to St Bernard hospital and survived due to the current not passing through his heart.
