Property owners on 74th Street between Stony Island and Merrill Avenues are relieved from sewer assessments after an ordinance repealing the charge. Ald. Thomas J. Daley 7th) filed the measure following a board order, saving each beneficiary an estimated $3,000 to $5,000. The sewer had been built last year as a Works Progress Administration project.

Grand Crossing post No 438 American Legion will install its new officers Saturday at 8 15 p m in the hall at 8644 Michigan ave Edwin Quinn commander of the Third District will be the installing officer and Tom Everling will act as sergeant at arms. Among invited civic leaders are Ald Michael F Mulcahy Capt Patrick Brady Judge Matthew D Hartigan Louis M Hecker and John A DeNormandie. Officers to be installed include Harry C Thorsell commander George W Krueger senior vice commander Robert L Irvine junior vice commander Herman M Lappe finance officer Robert T Roberts sergeant at arms Bud Singman delegate and Robert Dalton alternate.
Scores of Southeast residents plan to attend the International Air Thrill circus at the Lansing airport. Events include the Kiss of Death wing touch, parachute jumps, races, stunts, and a mimic dog fight in the air.
Alderman Michael F Mulcahy announced the second annual Eighth Ward festival to run September 25 to October 1. The ward is split into three districts with sub chairs guiding events including American Legion programs, a parent teacher program, a style show, boxing and vaudeville acts, plus an historical exhibit at the Chatham library.
Thomas J. Prendergast 84 longtime Southeast resident and building contractor died of a heart ailment last Friday night at his home 6158 Kimbark Ave. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Clara church. Burial followed at Mount Olivet cemetery. He came from County Mayo Ireland in 1880 and organized a contracting company in 1882. Survived by four sons James J John F William A and Cornelius C.
Thomas Walsh of 6319 Kenwood Avenue, secretary of the pickpocket detail of the Chicago police department, will be honored at a testimonial dinner tonight by Boy Scout troop No. 1380, at the Wedgewood hotel near 64th Street and Woodlawn Avenue. R. M. Polachek of 7946 Langley Avenue will be toastmaster.
More than 150 Southeast residents attended an ordination dinner for Rev. Joseph Regan at the Hayes hotel near 64th Street and University Ave. Regan was ordained Aug 31 in West De Pere Wis by the Premonstratensians and led his first Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Whiting Ind. He then taught at Catholic Central High School in Philadelphia after departing Chicago.
Dorothy Fostisch, 14, was bitten on her right arm by a rat while playing in a yard near 81st Street and Chappel Avenue last Friday night. She received treatment at South Shore hospital and is recovering at home.
Richard T. Britton a World War veteran confined to a chair due to arthritis was held prisoner by a theft of his wheel chair. The chair was recovered abandoned near 64th street on Ellis avenue close to the Pershing hotel where he resides. A trio of unidentified youths stole the chair Sunday night forcing Britton to endure three days without mobility. He had previously used the chair for recreation visiting neighbors and attending shows. He appealed to police after the loss.
Mrs. Mary Ann McIntyre 87, renowned as Oklahoma’s Pioneer Woman, visits Southeast Tulsa at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hawthorne. She travels with sister Mrs. Cynthia Blake and daughter Celia Blake, superintendent of Pittsburgh schools. The family settled in Pawnee after moving from New Haven and Cleveland, remaining there for over 75 years.
Barney Connett will launch a self built one man submarine at Michigan City Indiana to attempt a submerged crossing of Lake Michigan weather permitting. The craft resembles a large fish and is operated solo by the inventor who has spent six years refining the project.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe known as a founder of modern architecture becomes professor of architecture and director of Armour Institute of Technology’s school of architecture. Henry T. Heald announces the appointment as part of the Southside school expansion to elevate the department nationally.
The South Central Neighborhood Club cleared and leveled the idle northeast corner of 79th and State to create a community playfield. Volunteers hauled slag for a solid foundation, installed bleachers and lighting, and now the field serves after school and all day for kids. The club, chartered last month, plans winter ice skating and hockey and fall football, with monthly meetings and 25 cent dues.
Funeral services were held for Dr. William Leslie Bradford of 1746 East 72nd Street on Monday at Skeeles Biddle chapel. Burial followed at Oakwoods Cemetery. The Chicago Dental Society member died Friday after a weeklong illness from pneumonia at age 62. Widow Mrs Jeannette Bradford survives.
Two armed men robbed night clerk Gene Lenz at the South Shore View hotel at 7100 South Shore Sr. early Monday morning, taking $22. Grand Crossing police hunt the pair, linked to several near North Side hotel robberies last weekend.
A Southeast Pioneer man aged 52 died in a highway incident. Police described the event as a fatal crash along a rural corridor and are investigating contributing factors.
Two Southeast residents died in pre holiday auto crashes and four others injured. The dead are Mrs. John Chelius and Mrs. Lutimae Parker. Injured include Jack Chelius, Alice Parker, Richard Cone, Ned Strauss, and others. Mrs. Chelius, a pioneer Southeast resident, died near Ogallala Nebraska after a head on collision while returning from Golden Colorado where Jack studied at the Colorado School of Mines.
Funeral services were held in Peoria for Thomas A Mulcahey of 7239 Jeffery Avenue. He died Sunday evening at home after a heart ailment. Survived by widow Catherine daughter Winifred and brother James of Lacon Illinois. Mulcahey was a prominent Chicago South Side real estate operator and earlier worked in Peoria.
