Final instructions will be given at a church meeting, with commissioning at altar next Sunday by Rev. Arthur E. Enquist. The drive runs through June 10, led by divisions and captains, with contract awarded to Person Construction Co.
Ray Hinch of 10551 Seeley Avenue has been elected treasurer of the Illinois Elks Association. He is the immediate past exalted ruler of Elks South Lodge 7938 Halsted Street and now serves on the Grand Lodge’s 87th national convention committee. Hinch is the first South Lodge member elected to state office in 16 years. John Reinert of 2110 West Garfield Boulevard is exalted ruler of the South Lodge.
Funeral services for Junius C. Scofield 61 of 1954 & 73rd pl southeast side were held Tuesday at Donnellan chapel. Burial in Oak Woods cemetery. He died Saturday in Billings hospital after a prolonged illness. Born in Carthage, Illinois, he moved to Chicago in 1897 and was a Chicago Bar Association member and Bryn Mawr Community Church charter member.
A committee from Stevens-Doyle American Legion post 1755 at 1755 E 79th St launches a drive to collect 100 pints of blood for the Veterans Administration hospital at Hines. Donors meet at 1 p.m. on June 10 at 79th St and Jeffery Ave and will be driven to the hospital in a convoy. Commander Eric Hoyer urges Southeast siders to participate. last year 15 post members donated.
Coast Guard drive section north of Marquette road and 67th street will close to traffic starting Monday for two to three weeks. Robert Black, park district chief engineer, announced the final construction phase to widen the Southeast side bottleneck from four to six lanes between 63rd street and Marquette road. Bituminous Paving Company is the contractor. While closed, northbound traffic will be detoured.
Three South Side Marines recovering at Great Lakes Naval Hospital refuse to discuss their feelings on Korea. Sgt Richard Shinney, 20, from Union Ave, wounded in Korea, served from Inchon to Seoul. Cpl Edward Miller, 5844 Sawyer Ave, hit by nine bullets and an anti tank shell, and Sgt Raymond Rohde, 14514 Dearborn St, with leg and hand injuries, were among those unavailable for comment.
The bill to establish a Chicago regional port district passes both the state Senate and House awaiting signature. The seven member board would include a DuPage County resident and would widen the Calumet river and Cal-Sag channel to allow large barges to move cargos to the South Side. The district would issue permits, regulate operations, acquire and maintain port facilities, and set user charges to fund expenses.
