The South Shore library marked its 14th anniversary plus that of librarian Helen Babcock who founded book reviews and helped start the South Shore Historical Society now at 375 members. St Stephen's Lutheran solved choir issues by encouraging remaining men to take singing lessons. a Spring concert at 8 p.m. Sunday will feature the octette, Men’s Glee Club and Women’s Chorus.
Despite rain, South Shore American Legion Post led volunteers to sell 10 250 poppies raising about 500 more than last year’s 7 000. Maj Gen Aurand notes women drivers hired in Chicago last November have had no serious traffic accidents, handling cars and vehicles from passenger cars to trucks with minimal trouble.

Bids are being studied for structural work on the chemical building and for masonry on the building and a low-lift pumping station at Chicago's first filtration plant at 78th street and Lake Michigan. Kenneth Anderson manager of a night club at 1550 East 75th Street reported to police that early last Thursday morning two armed men with handkerchiefs over their faces entered the club and demanded the money. After taking $250 they locked him in his office and fled in an automobile.

Twelve year old John Joseph O'Donnell fell from a small wooden raft in Jackson park lagoon Monday afternoon. He drowned and was recovered around 7 p.m. An inquest returned a verdict of accidental death. Funeral services set for 9:30 a.m. at St Philip Neri church with six cousins as pallbearers. Survivors include his parents Mr and Mrs Francis O'Donnell and a twin sister Jean plus three sisters. His father is chief city electrical engineer.
Paul L. Williams, 24, convicted of fatally shooting grocer Thomas Papayanis during an attempted holdup at 22300 E 71st St, was sentenced by the Illinois Supreme Court to die in the electric chair on September 17. The date follows a prior death sentence affirmed by Chief Justice John A. Sbarbaro for an earlier conviction. Williams’ attorney plans a re hearing petition and may pursue the U.S. Supreme Court if denied. The state court case moved quickly, with the original sentencing set for January 16 and a stay granted days before execution. Williams previously attempted suicide in jail after a November 12 stay.

Hyman 33 a doctor for the military police escort corps at the Jerome and Rohwer Japanese relocation centers Dermott Ark were held Friday from the chapel at 69th st and Stony Island ave Burial was in West Lawn cemetery Lt Hyman was killed Monday of last week when the truck he rode in on the way to visit a patient skidded and overturned He lived with his parents Mr and Mrs Barnet Hyman at 1963 B 72nd st until his induction last November He had been a medical resident at Cook County Hospital two years and later opened his own office at 5240 Harper Ave He is survived by his wife Frances Perling his parents a sister Mrs Ethel Kubernick and two brothers Harry and Irving Hyman
Sergeant John Alexander 29 wrote that air raids over Germany were exciting and not as dangerous as people think. He vanished from his England army base after sending a letter dated April 27 received May 10. He served as a bomber gunner in England for about a month.
