Seven American Legion posts from the Third District will lead a parade to Essex Community Church at 74th street and Blackstone Avenue, assembling at 10:30 a.m. in uniform with auxiliaries and colors, then marching to the church. Anthony L. Rich will marshal, and Elmer Freeman will preach “American and World Peace.” Posts and commanders listed include South Shore Henry J. Dossell and Eaton-Priddy George J. Murphy, Fort Dearborn Roy F. Dwyer, Woodlawn Milton Silverman, Grand Crossing Harry C. Thorsell, Jackson Park Lawrence Walsh, and Chesterfield James M. Cross. Additional posts Hyde Park George Skau, John M. Liedtke, Yankee Frederick J. Grennan are expected. The South Chicago service will be May 28 at Bird Memorial Congregational Church with Rev. Thomas M. Lineweaver. Alonzo Dibble will be guest of honor. Bagley Camp No. 41 will oversee ritual. Bowen High School ROTC will escort. Maj. Jack Kimbel will speak. Edith Cavell post members will meet at the VFW Hall to finalize parade plans for Sunday.
George A. Ryan, formerly assistant Scout executive for North Shore in Highland Park, was named executive for the South Shore district in the Chicago council. A 37 year old graduate of Northern Illinois State Teachers College and the University of Chicago, he has held multiple Scouting positions in Illinois and New Jersey and taught in Aurora and Evanston. Cr. H. Engberg, former South Shore executive, now heads Valley council in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Alderman Thomas J. Daley sets June 15 for the South Shore Community council organization meeting at the South Side Swedish club on Ridgeland avenue. Invitations will go to over 100 civic business church and club leaders, with Oscar Hewitt and Edward L. Burchard already invited to speak, and S V Banksley Lews Mann C A Searing among those listed.
Gustave Phillips, 65, arraigned before Judge Michael L. McKinley on murder charges. After pleading guilty, his trial was set for next Wednesday. Phillips was ordered examined by Dr. Harry Hoffman. He killed his wife on May 13 and slashed his own throat, police said, then called from his home.
The Woodlawn Boys' Club lays out a broad summer recreation program using three playlots at 61st Street and Dordchester, Gist Street, and Harper Avenue near Gist Point, with school playgrounds at Scott and Wadsworth also available for sports activities. Rev Armin G Wong new president of the Illinois Synod of the United Lutheran Church of America will speak at Woodlawn Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church tonight marking the churchs 40th anniversary. The event also observes the pastors 25th anniversary since 1914 and the 15th anniversary of the present church edifice dedication with a 6 30 dinner for the church men and an 8 oclock service for all members families and friends.
