The Chicago school board plans to sponsor a WPA substitute day nursery project at Sullivan School 8255 Houston Ave and continue a South Chicago nursery at 9135 Brandon Ave. Funds from the federal government were accepted last week as WPA ends. The program requires no local funding and operates for children aged two to six in cooperation with the Office of Civilian Defense.

Francis A. Byrnes 70 retired fire battalion chief who aided at the Troquois Five fire and Eastland disaster died after surgery and pneumonia. Funeral at St. Bride's Church South Shore and burial Mt. Olivet. Byrnes served 40 years as a city fireman, later leading South Chicago battalion duties at engine company 93rd Street.

Funeral services for Josephine Perry a former representative from the 5th district to the 57th and 58th Illinois General Assemblies were held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church near 64th Street and Kimbark Avenue. Burial followed in Gibson City beside her parents. She was 61 and died Saturday at Wesley Memorial Hospital after years of poor health.

Aldenhoevel returned to Idaho for four days before flying back, sustaining facial injuries but mirroring a battle casualty.

High city officials attended the funeral of Alderman Patrick Sheridan Smith at Holy Cross church with Mayor Kelly as honorary pallbearer. Smith died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 80 on Thursday. burial was at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. A memorial resolution urged civic mourning and city hall closure until 1 p.m. on the day of the funeral.
