The publisher is found dead in his library from a bullet wound. A note claims suicide and a new will is allegedly hidden between pages 157 and 158 of a library book. The scene points to self-inflicted death, but readers are invited to solve whether murder or suicide occurred.
Harry Ford and neighbors raised a large woolen banner on a 40 foot pole in the courtyard of the 7038-48 Chappelave building. Weston E. Browne and the owner donated the flag. Marines and sailors salute the display visible to nearby residents. An open air block meeting and songfest is planned for the May full moon around May 20 to promote home defense activity. Browne, a Spanish American war veteran, hopes more flags appear locally.
Elizabeth Wilde publicist for Woodlawn Civilian Defense reports a War Savings bond derby at Stonehenge Apartment Hotel on Kenwood. Clarence Knowles, retired Illinois Central waterways chief, gave 375 dollars to zone captain Herbert Gardner to obtain a 500 dollar bond, then challenged others to reach 1,000 dollars. Federal Commissioner Edwin Walker met the challenge with a 1,000 dollar bond, and Knowles fulfilled his promise. Knowles, a Minute Man, notes he has four 500 dollar bonds in four days.
The consumer information service run by community women at Woodlawn library on Kimbark Ave criticizes the coffee and roll breakfast habit for poor nutrition. Southeast Chicago residents welcomed the Treasury Minute Men during a three day war bonds pledge drive closing last night. Many pledged to buy bonds regularly, with final totals to be announced next week. Final reports are due Monday to Civilian Defense offices.

Citizens are urged to display the flag United States flag from apartment windows or courtyards with landlord cooperation, or set a flag staff in the front yard for single family homes. The message promotes leaving Old Glory flying at every residence.
Citizens call for public fanfare as selectees leave town for training camps. They urge bands, flags, and crowds along State street to boost morale and deter saboteurs, arguing loud cheers will strengthen support and readiness of soldiers.

A Chatham auxiliary defense office opened and Woodlawn will offer Home nursing instruction for defense workers. An information center will open next Monday at Avalon Park school to teach cost saving measures in four lectures from 10 to 1130 AM.
Dr. G. George Knapp of the Woodlawn Property Owners League opens the fifth annual lawn and garden contest. The fall banquet at the University of Chicago will award prizes, urging all citizens to beautify premises amid wartime stress. Eligible participants include owners tenants and families with entry cards available.
Woodlawn's new hospitality program invites about 2000 naval trainees at the University of Chicago to social events. Girls aged 7 to 22 may register at three centers to be interviewed, with invited lists for neighborhood parties. Donations of cakes and snacks are requested, with perishable items brought to Ida Noyes Hall by 6 pm Saturday.
Chicago civic groups urged Attorney General Barrett to appeal to the U S Supreme Court for a temporary doubling of lake water diversion to treat South Side drinking water.
