A man carries three two pound billiard balls across a two mile long two mile deep ravine bridge with a 150 pound limit. He weighs 145 pounds plus six pounds of balls. He proves weight is not exceeded by crossing, but how.
A Sunday dedication at Sacred Heart Church on 96th Street honors 480 servicemen from one parish, a likely state and possibly national record. The list includes Capt. Paul Starcevich and several Lts Radosevich. parishioners serve across England, North Africa, Hawaii, Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, Iran, Australia, Africa, and the Pacific.
The ninth installment of the Economist series reproduces the War Department pocket guide for U S troops bound for China. It urges understanding Chinese customs, warns against generalizing about Chinese people, and stresses equality and respect to counter Japanese propaganda.
John Gustafson aged 18 and Otto Boardman aged 19 were sentenced by Judge John Sbarbaro to one year to life in the state penitentiary. They had been held since April 14 on bonds of 25 thousand dollars each for burglary and automobile theft. The youths admitted involvement in 26 burglaries mainly on the South Side.
Florian Kompanowski 16 was sent to the Illinois Training School for Boys at Sheridan for grand larceny and to the same institution for burglary. John Litscher 17 and Chester Wozniak 17 received five years probation. Patrick Donahue 16 was placed on five years probation. Fourteen and fifteen year olds in a related gang faced probation or parole, with one ringleader returned to St Charles training school. In all, 24 teens from four gangs were dealt with by judges in March to April.
Thomas M. Temple 57, longtime secretary to Herbert Hoover during relief work in Europe after World War I, died Friday at his home 6729 Jeffery Ave after a heart attack. Funeral Monday at 7918 South Park Ave with burial in Forest Hills Toledo beside his father. Survived by mother 91 and adopted son Lt. Thomas M. Temple Jr. Army Air Forces in Australia. WWI veteran. executive secretary for the Chicago Red Cross 1924 to 1927.
The South Shore Chamber of Commerce holds a meeting at 8 30 PM at the South Shore OCD headquarters located at 2454 E 75th St. Radio stars and club entertainers will be featured on the program.
Two Southeast side soldiers are reported missing in action since early year. Buddies have written home with little hope of return, while offering faint clues their sons may be prisoners. Families describe last contact from James Roche and William Gately as their letters and packages were returned marked missing in action.
The Polish American Non partisan committee of the th ward will honor newly elected alderman Nicholas J Bohling Jr at a 6:30 p.m. banquet on Sunday in Wagner's hall Bran don avenue. Alexander Brzezinski of 307 South Shore Drive chairs the event.
Pvt. John Scally 25, Woodlawn’s first wounded from the Africa front, returned home for leave and dined with teammates at host James M. Earle’s Woodlawn base ball club gathering. He received the Silver Star from the Woodlawn American Legion and a Woodlawn Business Men’s award, before rejoining active service at Fort Dix New York. The event honored his arm wound from a recon mission after his jeep hit a land mine. Banked by WAAC officers Evelyn Berry and Doris Chapman, the gathering included family, ball club teammates and fellow service members.
Dr Thomas Yatabo a longtime California dentist and head of the Japanese American Citizens committee will speak on his concentration and relocation camp experiences at a Woodlawn South Shore Kiwanis club meeting May 26. The event starts at 12 15 p m in the Southmoor hotel.
Robbers with black masks hold up Peter Gustafson at 1 a.m. near his tavern at 1300 East 75th Street and steal 1900 dollars. A second holdup at 2 a.m. Monday targets Mr. and Mrs. Israel Segall at their Phillips Avenue home, where jewels valued at 1250 dollars and 50 dollars cash are taken by a lone masked bandit.
About 1 000 South Shore OCD canvassers sold 283 315 50 of War Savings bonds in a 13 billion dollar sale. Charles Sawyer led the effort from 7556 Luella Avenue. Block 3 Zone 24 reported 41 500 in bonds. Raymond Merlander of 2009 E 77th St is block captain for the area.
Thirty air raid conservation salvage and morale wardens in Zone 16 of Grand Crossing will be inducted into OCD at an 8 p.m. meeting in Salem parish hall at 74th Street and Calumet. The program will include defense work motion pictures. Speakers include Walter Tredup and Walter Feldhof. Zone boundary spans yard to 75th streets Indiana and South Park avenues. Zone captain is Thomas Sharkey.
