The Protectograph reduced raised checks, but forgers adapted, finally using watermarked paper with VOID patterns to thwart acid ink. The story notes ongoing schemes to counterfeit and cash checks.
Three improvement projects promised by the Works Progress Administration and Chicago officials aim to boost Southeast community infrastructure. The plan prioritizes an earth-fill dock at Lake Calumet’s south end and channel fill to open 134th Street to traffic, creating an east west thoroughfare. The major project, costing about 64 000 dollars, will occupy a 125 acre tract along Lake Calumet’s southern shore for a river terminal and city barge landing.

World War I hero Harry Wollenberg died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a garage at his home on South Park Avenue. He had gone to repair his car at about 10 pm Friday. after hours passed his maid found his body beneath the vehicle. Rescue attempts failed.
The Woodlawn Business Men's Association leaders a playful mayoral and first lady race as part of its 30th anniversary. Eight candidates campaign vigorously ahead of the June 22 grand anniversary ball at the Trianon. Sloganist Mrs Chladek promotes pedestrian safety while Pierson pushes for more playgrounds for Woodlawn children.
Four hundred Southeast children entertain a crowd of thousands Saturday at 2 p.m. in the meadow near the Jackson Park golf shelter. The event marks the opening of the outdoor park season with a Maypole dance by Bret Harte pupils and dances by Kozminski Shakespeare and Parkside students, plus various sports and attractions. Invited guests include Chicago Park District President Robert J. Dunham and Superintendent George Donaghue.
The South Shore Junior Chamber of Commerce opened a campaign to warn merchants about fake solicitors claiming to advertise South Shore firms. Acting chairman John Reilly urged verification of credentials and legitimate organizations before contracting for ad space. Copies went to the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and Chicago Better Business Bureau.
Mr and Mrs Israel Adler ages 55 and 54 were struck by a machine driven by Irene Maginn on Cottage Grove Ave near 7942. They suffered a fractured hip and head and facial lacerations. Both were treated at Dr Bennett s emergency hospital and Mrs Adler later moved to Michael Reese hospital in fair condition.
Grand Crossing-Chatham Chamber of Commerce plans a petition drive after Chicago Surface Lines refused to add Ingleside avenue stops for Hirsch high school students. Principal Arthur Nicholson and chamber leader Ambrose Burke advocate stops benefiting Hirsch high school, Grand Crossing Masonic temple, and Ingleside Church.
Southeast motorists were warned by George W. Fleming that automobiles must bear the official safety sticker for the current inspection period or face arrest. About 210,000 Chicago vehicles have not been inspected. A police drive will arrest all unmarked cars until compliance is achieved.
City recreation leaders will discuss extending facilities and programs to serve thousands of children at a 7:30 p.m. city hall chambers gathering. Southeast leaders including Thomas E. Corcoran and Andrew J. Grand Crossing police searched yesterday for three gunmen who held up Henry Ives at a filling station on Exchange avenue last Saturday night. They forced Ives into a washroom and took $69 before fleeing in an automobile. Investigators reviewed the license number Ives obtained.
The Southeast Economist promotes Southtown Beach at Fish Lake Indiana offering lake lots for $78 payable in two years plus a $1.50 annual subscription and $10 down for a reader to secure a preferred plot. The development includes a clubhouse, swimming platforms, hunting rights on Lake Elaine, road access, and protective regulations with a later Lot Owners' Protective association to maintain community property.
