Garrigan, 1406 E 67th Pl, named as the community’s outstanding contributor by the South Shore Junior Chamber of Commerce. Garrigan topped the list by the Civic Betterment Committee led by Lee Radburn Jr. at 7609 Yates Ave. The 32 year old Northwestern University Law School graduate is active in promoting the city manager plan, prenatal syphilis control legislation, a flat tax, and fiscal issues. He is vice president of the National Association of Civic Secretaries.

The measure, urged by the judiciary committee, outlines creation, leadership, and powers of the new planning bodies and links ex officio officials and key City council committees.
Seventy five Hirsch high school seniors will tour Judge Hartigan's Criminal Court this morning as part of Crime Prevention Week. The visit, coordinated by the South Shore Lions Club with A. F. Scott in charge, Marshall Anderson and J. Leslie Rosenblum assisting, includes principal Arthur Michelson and other staff.
The Chicago Park District cannot fund planned improvements along Jeffery Avenue from 75th to 71st streets hindering beautification and lighting. Herman Benthey and Paul L. Robert MacDonald a 50 year old Hirsch High School engineer was burned on the face and neck Tuesday morning when formaldehyde bottle exploded as he poured chlorine into it near the pool area. He was rushed to Jackson Park hospital with burns and kept for observation. No other injuries reported and no eye or lung damage from chlorine.
In a 1939 convention at the Hotel Sherman 2 035 Illinois Federation of Women s clubs members unanimously urged Congress to enact legislation preventing entanglement in European conflict while supporting adequate domestic defense The motion was presented by Mrs A R Dry with speeches by Mrs Charles L Gerds Mrs George A Stevenson and Mrs William G Suthers among others and cites the Borah position on armaments abroad.
Liverpool born Marti E Denash, 7108 Rhodes, rose from a handmade pinhole camera to a nautical photographer with global exhibitions. A member of Hamilton Park Lens and Shutter club, he built a 22 foot boat Beth named after his wife Elizabeth. Denash sailed merchant ships, served in the English Naval reserve, and arrived in Chicago in 1920 to settle on the South Side.
Jackson Park plans a Sunday 2 pm spring festival at the park golf shelter meadow with over 1,000 students from 20 public and parochial schools. The event, organized by the park and South East council PTA, honors mothers with performances by multiple grammar school choirs, a Maypole dance, folk dances, bands, and a Horace Mann band finale. In case of rain, the program moves to the following Sunday.
City engineer Loran Gayton announced that work on a new 85 acre beach for South Shore will begin this week to replace the current site near the 75th to 79th street area. The $983,100 contract was awarded to Fitze Simmons and Contell, funded by a 21 million filtration plant project near the lake.
In observance of National Hospital Day four Southeast Side hospitals announce open houses tomorrow. Jackson Park Hospital at 763 Tony Island Ave hosts all day with afternoon tea. South Chicago Hospital at 2823 E 92nd Pl hosts 2 to 5 pm with a private obstetric room dedication. South Shore Hospital at 8015 Luella Ave 2 to 5 pm. Woodlawn Hospital at 6060 Drexel Ave 2 to 4 30 pm. Graduates of 1939 Jackson Park Hospital School of Nursing stage exercises next Wednesday at South Shore Community Church at 74th St and Yates Ave.
William H. McDonnell publisher of the Southeast Economist Frank Rathie president of the Chicago City Bank and Trust company and John Jirgal financial counsellor for utilities companies left Chicago yesterday morning for Guaymas Mexico for a 12 day Gulf of California fishing vacation. They will fish for marlin big sea bass 62 trout yellowtail bonita and other smaller fish aboard a cruiser awaiting them at Guaymas on the salt coast of Mexico.
