Send-Of Herman Thomas, a colored waiter at the Hayes hotel for 15 years, is praised by Mrs. Howard L. Ray and Dr. G. Brockman of Avalon Park writes verse to two girls who washed and ironed clothes for park dolls.

Qualified applicants will receive commissions as captains and lieutenants. Funeral services for Charles Engstrom 69 were held in Chicago at the chapel on East 75th Street with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital after being struck in the 600 block of East 76th Street by Raymond Trongeau 19 of Championnave. An inquest was continued to next Wednesday.
World War I veteran Harry Ford leads a neighborhood flag display in a South Shore courtyard to spur patriotism and neighborly cooperation. An eight by twelve foot American flag hangs across the court from roof to roof, with 24 apartments participating to show outward interest in world affairs.
Plans for a membership drive will be drawn at a meeting of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce next Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the South Shore National Bank. J. Leslie Rosenblum is membership chairman and Edward Allen Tabor serves as president of the organization.
A Woodlawn victory procession of over 1,000 people stretched more than a mile through the district ending at Jackson Park. The event featured bands, floats, and uniforms with participants from Navy trainees, police, Legion posts, Boy Scouts, Mt. Carmel band, and University of Chicago services. A bond drive appeal and gold star parent tributes highlighted the victory party at the Trianon with remarks by John Gallaher and a Mark Love concert finale.
Southeast side Minute Men prepare for a state wide War Savings bonds pledge campaign set for Monday to Wednesday. By Saturday they will be mobilized to solicit every man woman and child. Radio broadcasts Sunday announce last minute instructions and city mayoral address.
Superintendent William H. Johnson announced the Chicago Vocational School at 87th Street and Anthony Avenue will be turned over to the Navy next month as a training school for mechanics. The 3.5 million building will be converted and expanded with a 500 thousand housing addition to serve up to 4,000 navy trainees and 1,500 civilians in defense courses, with facilities for welding, woodwork, printing, aviation, electrical, physics, chemistry and auto training.
An estimated 360,600 persons in the Southeast side four wards are to be registered for sugar ration books by tonight. In two days 179,071 names A through L have applied, with registrations continuing for S then T through Z before 8 pm. Michael F. Mulcahy, Chicago rationing director, cites ward totals: sixth 44,299 seventh 49,287 eighth 50,115 tenth 35,370, with Tuesday about 2,000 more than Monday and higher totals expected today and tomorrow.
