Soldiers at Chicago Service Men's Center gain access to a public stenographer for rush letters. A serviceman recently dined with a Chicago family and became engaged to the daughter. RAF flyers pursued by a cinema star and a play star helped by fans and Sherlock Holmes sent tickets and tracked down mislaid bookings for the men.
A new patriotic pin shows a caricature of Hitler with a rope around his neck and the inscription Lets Pull Together. Ruth Cowen proposed the design to galvanize support for the fighting spirit and national unity.

Dr. F M Duerime, a Filipino physician and Chicago council leader, told Woodlawn Lions the Philippines faces invasion with defiance. He traced history from precolonial times through Spanish rule and U S governance, noting gains in health and schooling and a 16.5 million population across 7083 islands. He praised U S efforts against malaria and smallpox and described ongoing independence aims.
Dr George Guy Knapp of 1305 E 63rd St is elected president of the Woodlawn Property Owners league at the annual board meeting held at 1230 E 63rd St. He succeeds Leo T Heid who led since 1937. The group serves about 1900 of 2500 parcels from 60th to 67th and Stony Island to Cottage Grove.
Police report a Monday tire theft spree likely by an organized gang. Twenty used tires chained to a service station rack, plus two spare wheels from a car trunk, and other parts from several vehicles were stolen in multiple incidents on the Southeast side, with victims naming Clifton Piercy and Armin Schlesinger among others.
Palm Sunday services span Protestant and Catholic churches with cantatas and pageantry. In First Presbyterian Bowman preaches Walking With God Into the Shadow at 11 am, children sing The Palms. A 55 foot flag pole at the South Shore branch on 73rd Street and Exchange Avenue will fly Old Glory starting next Saturday. The 3 pm ceremony will be led by Edward Allen Tabor, president of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, with William D. Owen supervising the flag raising. Civic leaders and Boy and Girl Scouts will attend.
The Stony Island park district announces new defense offices at 1606 E 82nd St with Eric C. Ericksen as community commander. The center will coordinate defense activities and offer first aid and consumer relations classes. A mass meeting in South Shore, with speaker Walter Roy, lieutenant for the Chicago Civil Defense, is set for 8 p.m. next Monday at South Shore High School.
Passover rites start next Wednesday with a seder at South Side Hebrew Congregation directed by Dr. Irving Barkan. Services follow Thursday morning as the ritual travels through temples and synagogues including South Shore Temple and Congregation Am Echad with children and first born observances and sermons by Rabbis Teller Fox and colleagues.
Administrator Michael F. Mulcahy explains how Chicago area residents will register for sugar rationing books from May 4 to 7. Individual signups will occur at local elementary schools with hours 8 am to 8 pm and after dinner access for workers. Registration will use alphabetical groupings to prevent crowds and confusion.
Four men described as the trunk bandit gang received prison terms of one year to life from Judge Harold G. Ward after convictions for five robberies. Harold Fleeger, Vernon Haynes, Owen Enos, and Gerald Fleeger faced minimums of three years for the younger men and two years for Gerald, with state officials hinting at reopening 22 other robbery charges. The gang earned its name by stuffing victims in car trunks during robberies on the Southeast side.
Walter J. Riley president of the South Shore National Bank and Red Cross unit chair announced the South Shore war fund drive met its goal with $2005 raised. He urged volunteers to unite for a strong Red Cross and emphasized first aid home nursing and nutrition training as key steps for community preparedness.
