Residential construction in the Chicago metropolitan area rose 24 percent in January and February 1954 compared with the same period in 1953, with 4,984 dwelling units authorized. City totals fell month to month, while suburbs showed strong gains, especially outside Chicago where 1,794 permits were issued in February.

Urban Renewal Plan Aims to Save Four and Half Miles
City officials unveiled a four front plan to stop blight on the Southeast Side. The urban renewal effort covers 4.5 square miles between E 39th and E 67th streets from Cottage Grove to the lake led by the University of Chicago and the South East Chicago commission. The plan includes public funding to spur private home construction, land acquisitions by New York Life near Lake Meadows, and a pledge from building officials to prioritize conservation. A Chicago Dwellings Association pilot program would build 12 homes on scattered Englewood Hyde Park Laketown lots selling for about 12000 dollars each to bolster the public housing revolving fund.
