In South Deering and Calumet Heights residents discuss chores they wish automation could handle. Women name ironing, dishwashing, laundry sorting, cooking, and housekeeping tasks they hope a future device or robot could perform to save time and effort.
The South Chicago Chamber of Commerce voted to oppose a state bill authorizing branch banking in Illinois. A special committee chair, Samuel C. Maragos, criticized the Ran dolph bill as poorly written, while Dr Ted Urbanek supported branch banking, saying Chicago is underbanked. James Papageorge, director of Steel City National Bank, introduced the anti-branch resolution at the March 4 meeting.
Charles A. Jacobson proposed a Lake Skyway mile out in Lake Michigan from Indiana Harbor to Evanston or Milwaukee to protect recreational shorelines. The plan envisions steel and concrete piers, harbor facilities south of E 79th Street, and connections to Calumet Skyway and expressways to ease traffic while preserving parks.
Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned the E. 106th st bridge over the Calumet River will be closed Sunday March 22 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Barricades will block E. 106th st at S Torrence ave S Ewing ave S Indianapolis ave and Avenue L.
Three men posing as customers locked three employees including Nathan Richardson and Willie Willis in a cooler at closing time of Market Fishery in Grand Crossing. Owner Harvey Brady was forced to surrender a wallet with 315 dollars while the trio fled. No injuries were reported.
Eleven girls from the Busy Bees club at Caldwell School present Grandfather's Book Shop and a puppetry act on March 28 at 2 30 p.m. at 8511 S Cregier Ave. Proceeds go to Tulley Park School for retarded children.
Don Holdeman presents a 50 photo Holy Land story titled Where Jesus Walked in the Evergreen Plaza promenade. The display runs now through Easter Sunday with Easter music, numbered panels, special lighting, and a guided photo story of Jerusalem and sites in the Holy Land.
Public apathy was cited as a major problem hindering urban renewal efforts in South Chicago. At a meeting in Our Lady of Guadalupe church, officials urged residents and organizations to engage, warning that without widespread interest blight would persist and public housing could loom. A 30 to 40 member committee was to be formed to represent the area bounded by E 83rd to 92nd streets and the Illinois Central tracks, as part of CCB planning.
South Side Hebrew congregation's sisterhood hosts an April 6 open meeting and dessert luncheon at 12:45 pm in the Samuel Flanders room. Attendees will try to identify silhouettes drawn by Shirley Levin with prizes for most correct identifications.
Police safety educator Patrick McGoldrick spoke to a Girl Scout troop at St John Baptist De LaSalle church hall and to Hirsch Haigh School juniors and seniors about bicycle safety. He plans a suburb round trip hike for the girls and will address 300 boys at the Chatham YMCA on April 15 and Rosemoor Community Association on April 21 at St Johns church. He serves Burnside and Morgan Park districts.
S Wallace Street from East 41st to East 47th streets now features 7500 watt lights as a substitute for mercury vapor lamps requested by residents. Alderman Burke requested the change after complaints about darkness near St. Gabriel's rectory and near Thomas McInerney's Sons Undertakers with mercury vapor allowed only on arterial streets.
The Gateway Civic Commission will conduct surveys in North Avalon South Avalon Stony Island Heights Burnside Triangle and Chatham east of Cottage Grove to identify properties for sale or rent. Results will be shared with realtors and civic groups to attract desirable tenants and buyers. Moran said the group may join a program with the South Side Forum and Stony Island Businessmen to learn expressway plans, opposing an elevated Stony Island avenue. Secretary Glen L. Jones resigned and a successor has not yet been elected.
Richard Whitlock aged 31 of 7841 South Drexel Boulevard was killed in a two car collision on North Lake Shore Drive at East Oak Street while turning from Michigan Avenue. Roy Cortes aged 26 of 1837 North Orchard Street faces reckless homicide and drunken driving charges. Cortes and his wife were treated at Henrotin Hospital. Services for Whitlock set for Tuesday at 7838 South Cottage Grove Avenue with interment in Mt. Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, parents, brothers Edward and Robert, and sister Betty Kosmulksi.
George Martinek a 54 year old electrician was wounded in the abdomen when his wife Lennie 47 of 502 East 72nd Street lunged with a break down .38 revolver during a heated quarrel. Mrs Martinek charged with assault with a deadly weapon, case adjourned to April 28. The victim refused to file a complaint and witnesses were lacking.
Rosemoor residents plan to list about 300 street repair needs caused by winter weather and send the compiled list to the city. The Roseland Area Planning association will provide forms to locate exact repair sites and also offers alleys grading at nominal private firm cost. Assistant chair Dennis H. Bright noted traffic signal improvements at E 103rd street and S Doty avenue, with faster light changes and shorter waits for pedestrians. The meeting at St John Baptist de LaSalle church hall heard from president Albert F Magnus.
