Southeast side gardeners plan Victory gardens as a homework in landscape practice. A triangular garden has six large rose bushes on each side and at each angle. How many bushes are there in total?
Paul C Standley curator of the Field Museum herbarium argues sugar is unnecessary for health and cites historical diets in Europe and Russia. He notes sugar cane origins in Asia and Arab Spain and claims sugar beet products are chemically indistinguishable from cane sugar.
Ten thousand members organized as tank teams patrol Chicago neighborhoods in a drive to conserve paper for war production. Each pound of collected paper is an enemy prisoner, funding summer camp for the youths and supporting reprocessing efforts.
Epicureans on the Southeast side attend the Grand Crossing council Royal league oyster supper held in its lodge hall on South Chicago avenue. The event, famed for oyster stew, reflects decades of growing expertise since the council’s 1888 origins amid railroad expansion and roadside gardens.
Mrs Ralph Merriam of Kim barkave receives top poet honor as her poem Wind in April appears in On the Horizon a Whitman memorial volume. Hyde Park high school students form a junior Victory Army to entertain service men. The troupe includes John Poister and Mel Torme on drums, Joe LaVine and James Wharton at the piano, Buddy Green on accordion, Sonny Kleinfelder and John Segal on reed instruments, Rochelle and Harriet Jacobs as singers, Gene and Doris Valentine, Harvey Ellman, and Fenny Marks as dancers. Master of ceremonies is senior Stanley Shier. They plan shows at nearby army camps.

Captain Elmer M Walsh of 707 Bennet Ave long time civic leader and infantry officer in the U S Army Reserve has been called to active service and assigned to the Provost Marshal General department with the Sixth Corps Area in Chicago He headed multiple community groups including the South Bryn Mawr Improvement Association Holy Name Society Our Lady of Peace church and the 79th Street Business Men's Association He led Boy Scout troop 586 and was a South Shore YMCA charter member He recently became a Civilian Defense zone supervisor and ran as a Republican for Superior Court judge last year finishing ninth in a 21 candidate field with Chicago Bar Association backing.
Two people died on the Southeast Side when struck by Sinovis Central suburban trains. Arkell Conzelman, 9, of 7129 Woodlawn Avenue, a Paul Revere School pupil, and a man about 55 identified only by a card bearing the name Patrick Henry Dolan were victims. The boy was killed near 72nd Place and Woodlawn Avenue as he ran onto the tracks while being chased by older youths. The coroner’s jury ruled accidental death. The man’s death was ruled self-inflicted after witnesses said he hurled himself across the tracks near 73rd Street and Exchange Avenue. A social security card, glasses, a rooming-house key, a cardboard disk with 416, and a cane were found on the body. The man’s identity remains pending.
Southeast side janitors will join in the Chicago Flat Janitor's union program for the salvage of essential war material announced yesterday by W. L. Mc Fetridge, president. Property owners, agents and tenants will be asked to cooperate with janitors in saving materials useful in the defense program.
The two Southeast Side rationing boards at 1745 E. 95th St and 5934 Cottage Grove Ave granted two purchase certificates to physicians, with board No. 4 on 95th St reporting no permits issued. Only 340,000 new cars, 10 percent of normal production, will be available in 1942 to cover war work needs, while 135,000 cars are held in a 1943 stockpile.
Civilian Defense headlines announce block captains for Woodlawn and Chatham, mass meeting in Jackson Park next Monday at 8 p.m. at O Keeffe School, with J K Langum to speak on Price Control and its Effect on Consumers. Grand Crossing offices open daily for defense, and South Shore names Hargrove and Lane to lead zone captains and public relations.
Mrs. Anne R. Ford appointed superintendent of the South Chicago United Charities office at 9145 Houston Ave, succeeding Christine Wagner who retires after seven years. Ford has two years as assistant superintendent, is University of Pittsburgh graduate, former Pittsburgh social worker, and wife of Friendly Ford, Big Brothers director.
Eleven officials replied yesterday to a proposal by the Associated Clubs of Woodlawn urging the War Department to increase water diversion from Lake Michigan. The plan aims to limit industrial pollution in the Chicago Southside Sanitary District canal, Calumet river, and Seg canal to prevent a large scale epidemic. Rose A. Woodhull and Prof. Anton J. Carlson commented on the broader regional and federal implications.
Beginning Saturday, fire stations on the southeast side will open for voter registration for the April 14 primary. Registration hours are daily 1 to 9 p.m. until March 16, the final day for registrations, transfers, and re registrations due to name changes. Stations will be closed Sunday, March 15.

She recalls Governor Lowden’s call, the need to file wartime records in the Illinois State Historical Library, and the rise of Victory Gardens amid food shortages and high prices.

The rent protest center plans government action by May 1 if controls fail. A Chicago Real Estate board survey finds operating costs up 5 to 11 percent, with repairs and materials rising, fueling landlord resistance to decorating and modest increases.
Dr Maude Hall Winnett will instruct the Red Cross first aid class in the Woodlawn library starting today. The course meets every Thursday from 7 to 10 p m and is open to men and women of the community who wish to register at the opening session. Located at 6247 Kimbark Avenue.
Ralph Burke detailed a city wide air raid siren network for Chicago civilian defense. The system uses fire station mounted equipment and police radio signals to warn motorists and residents with two minute fluctuating and steady siren tones. Signals are received at 15 control stations with yellow then red indicators signaling approaching planes and imminent public warning.
Mrs Rose Kelly Joyce a 38 year old history teacher at Hyde Park high school since 1933 will face trial before the Board of Education on April 22. She was suspended after sending February 18 a letter to a 20 year old draft objector praising his war stance. Joyce a Hyde Park graduate and University of Chicago master’s alum, has a long teaching record and current residence at the Plaisance hotel.
