Two from South Side Among First Feminine Marines
Marie Elizabeth Anderson of 7331 Dorchester Ave and Mary Elizabeth Stoll of 7939 Kimbark Ave are among the first Southeast side women accepted into the Marines feminine corps. Anderson, 30, a Loop secretary, is the first in her family to go to war. Stoll, 20, is the second in her family with brother Evan serving as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps at Baerfield, Ind. Both joined the ground floor unit in hopes of advancement and are in enlisted personnel.

Policeman Richard Grace Retires But Not for Long
Policeman Richard V. Grace of Woodlawn station retires at 63 after 28 years with the Chicago Police. He plans a two week Hot Springs vacation then expects to return to work on another job, likely in a defense plant. Grace, formerly a detective at Wabash station, has three commendations and survived a South Side riot where a fellow officer was killed and his hat was shot off. Southeast Side garden meetings plan war garden effort
The South Shore OCD aims to plant a garden in every vacant lot and rear yard. About 300 garden wardens and district leaders will meet next Thursday at 8 p.m. in the OCD headquarters 2454 E 74th St to plan the season. Similar sessions are planned across Southeast side communities with Farnham L Eldridge to speak at Woodlawn library at 8 p.m. Tuesday about vegetable growing using colored slides. Avalon Park hosts a 2 30 p.m. Sunday session led by victory garden chair Harry Turrell to discuss ground access for gardens. Grand Crossing Chatham groups meet at 8 p.m. tonight in Grand Crossing park fieldhouse to view soil prep films. Bernard Thompson and Orville Daley lead the Grand Crossing and Chatham chairs respectively with George Englert guiding a Calumet Heights session next Wednesday at 8 p.m. in OCD office. More than 1000 people daily flock to the new income tax branch at 6555 Cottage Grove Ave as the March 15 deadline nears. Downtown offices remain busy with congestion at the U.S. Courthouse. Branch head Thomas Blanchfield urged Southeast residents to use the branch to ease downtown crowds.
