CHA Reveals Public Housing Demographics in Annual Report
Chicago Housing Authority details in its 34 page annual report show 23 percent of recent movers are mothers with children and 28 percent are recipients of public assistance. Puerto Rican families number about 200 with most tenants in the last two years. Sixty-one percent of last year’s tenants were Black, and 17,500 CHA units are occupied by this group. The agency highlights a growing demand with applications averaging 1,000 monthly and 5,000 relocation families from slum sites. CHA plans federally aided development to secure a contract by June 1955 and will relocate rental offices to 1824 E Congress St May 1.
