Chicago plans a citywide air pollution control station to monitor daily air quality and oversee industrial emissions, with a site under review at a Southeast Chicago school. A Metropolitan Air Pollution control committee is proposed to include six Illinois counties and Lake County Indiana. Public guidance urges burning avoidance and efficient home heating, while city officials prepare the ordinance and public orientation efforts.
The South Region of ORT temporarily renames the Schichtens corner of Eo Tist St and S Jeffery Ave to ORT Square from February 26 through ORT Day March 5. Mayor Richard E. Daley proclaims the renaming while officials and local leaders post signs at the site.
South Chicago Kiwanis plans a noon meeting at the South Chicago YMCA to host Lt. Gov. Frank Jasky of Kiwanis District IV. about 170 attended last Tuesday. The board approved flags for a new Cub Scout pack and elected delegates to the Kiwanis International convention in Chicago June 29.
The South Chicago Chamber of Commerce will hold a noon meeting on Wednesday at the South Chicago YMCA located at 3039 E. 91st St. James W. Crowe, the chamber president, has been meeting with new committees and reports may be requested from chairmen.
Stanley Frank chairs a supplementary $50,000 fund drive for Rodfei Sholom Oir Chodosh at 9109 S Euclid Ave to fund a new sanctuary and school. The project, already under construction, aims to finish by the High Holidays in September 1958, inviting 100 new members to join the effort. Rabbi Arnold M Goodman and congregation president Harry B. Aron speak on the plan.
Purim, the joyous Jewish festival, begins sundown Wednesday with Megillah readings and carnival activities at Congregation Am Echod and Congregation Rodfei Zedek. The observances commemorate Esther and Mordecai's rescue of the Jews in ancient Persia, with customs of giving to the poor and exchanging gifts. Activities include Purim carnivals, children in Megillah costumes, and a Rodfei Zedek weekend schedule ending with a Sabbath-Purim luncheon and a Cantata festival production of My Fair Lathe.
A second taxpayer suit seeks to halt plans to use Burnham Park lakefront for a convention hall. Judge Thomas Kluczynski set March 17 for trial after Circuit Judge Dempsey twice declined to dismiss. Attorneys Watkins and Sawyer claim bonds and lease are invalid and the site selection violated constitutional and statutory requirements.
Chicago postsmaster Carl A. Schroeder opened the Jackson Park Postal Station at 700 E 61st St with a ribbon cut. The 22 000 square foot facility serves Zone 37 from State Street to Lake Michigan and 45th Street to 7099 South, featuring eight service windows, 10-vehicle dock, air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, and modern mail handling for about 103 carriers, 20 clerks, two mail handlers and three collectors.
Lieutenant Sheridan receives a station transfer from East Side Station 10120 S Ewing Ave to Maxwell Street Station. The move was announced yesterday by Commissioner of Police Timothy J. O Connor.
