The Joys celebrate approval of a 14 mile eight lane limited access South Expressway costing 112 million dollars. It will run from the Loop through Southtown linking with the Calumet Expressway Calumet Skyway toll road and Governor's highway. The plan has state approval and city council backing after a recent meeting.
Aldermen will formalize the Calumet Skyway expressway project at the session, with land already being acquired south of Marquette road. First concrete planned July 1, 1957, completion target 1961, possible 1960. A $250 million city bond issue and matching federal funds back the project. The plan includes widening Marquette road, creating an industrial corridor, and adding four ramps at W 63rd street. Union Station in Englewood would be rebuilt with improved ingress and egress at 63rd street. Summer begins as Chicago braces for 30 days of above normal temperatures following the seasonal change.
Hyde Park residents urged the City Council subcommittee to oppose a $30 million plan to rehabilitate 800 acres in the Hyde Park Kenwood area from E 47th to E 59th streets. They warned a proposed shopping center on E 55th could worsen traffic and noise in residential streets.
The Chicago Park District plans to open 13 lakefront beaches this Friday with about 300 lifeguards ready. Outdoor pools start July 2. Park Police will augment lifeguards as season runs through Labor Day. Last year over 16 million people visited the beaches.
Chicago Housing Authority moves to finish proposals for redevelopment of the 63rd Street South Park sites approved May 9. Proposals must be ready by July 31 to secure federal aid under the 1955 Housing Act. If met, at least two years pass before construction begins with title searches surveys and appraisals done before land negotiations.
The Glidden Co opened a six and a half million bushel capacity grain elevator on the Calumet River east bank at E 117th street. The $6 million terminal spans 20 acres and can lift 700000 bushels in eight hours, handling over 13 percent of Chicago’s grain storage. Dwight P. Joyce says it will be a major shipping center after the St. Lawrence Seaway completion, boosting national agriculture.
New mercury vapor lighting will brighten East 87th street between South Jeffery and South Stony Island avenues this fall. East 87th Street Businessmen's Association leaders Jack Grossman Robert Wilkins and Edward Fleming met Alderman Emil Pacini to secure the installation and sidewalk repairs for the area to aid shoppers and visitors.
Southeast churches plan two week vacation Bible schools starting Monday June 25 with morning sessions from 9 to 11 30. Gustavus Adolphus Evangelical Lutheran church led by Rev Einar J Oberg will run June 25 to July 6 and July 2 to 13 at Avalon Park Community church others including Tabor and Trinity Lutheran join in a joint school June 25 to July 6.
Southeast area public schools close this week with Friday assemblies for all elementary pupils. Graduation exercises will be held at Southtown high schools on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Democratic candidate Herbert Paschen toured the Southeast Economist offices after a talk with publisher W. H. McDonnell. He visited editorial, business, and composing room areas during the handshaking tour yesterday.

In a dramatic delivery the baby boy Norman Jr. was born Friday in the back seat of an automobile. Mother Mrs. Norman Harris and infant were taken to South Chicago Community hospital in good condition. Father and older siblings Debra Gay and Rhonda Lee are named in the family.
