Introduced by John Hayes she led the Lady Mayor Day program outlining Woodlawn’s early history and women’s accomplishments as Julia Baker and I Chiadek shared notes.
Mr and Mrs F G Everard of 1334 Evans Ave recently returned from a week in Rocky Mountain National Park. They stayed in a high mountain lodge and hiked trails. On the trail they met Charlotte Shapland, formerly of the Southeast community, who has lived with her family in Omaha for the past six years.
South Shore merchants team with the Chamber of Commerce for a two fold Dollar Day and Sales Mean Jobs event next Thursday. The promotion features thousands of Summer values across merchandise from fishing tackle to footwear and hair oil to handkerchiefs. A first come, first served policy, augmented stock, extra help, and extended parking are planned to handle anticipated crowds. Committee head E J Ryan with David Saper and Lawrence Myers organize the sales blitz with pennants and theater trailers to attract shoppers.
Six year old David Kepple, son of Mr and Mrs H M Kepple of 1420 East 65th Place, was sent to Watervliet Michigan to spend the summer with his grandmother to avoid contracting whooping cough. Despite this, his mother received word that he is actively coughing in the country, as many other city children are.
An initial hearing convened before the Illinois Commerce Commission at 180 N LaSalle Street on a bid to open grd street at Ellis Avenue by building an underpass beneath the Illinois Central and Nickel Plate railroad lines. The railroads oppose the project citing financial inability to proceed.
Funeral services were held for Frederick Ayres Lorenz Jr a prominent Southeast resident and steel company executive at Donnelan chapel. Burial followed in Oak Woods cemetery. Lorenz vice president of American Steel Foundries and former president of the Steel Founders Society of America resided at 7000 South Shore Dr. He died Saturday at Passaic Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Surviving are his widow Tio Miller Lorenz a son Frederick a daughter Tia Miller and his mother Mrs Predevick A Lorenz.
Woodlawn Business Men's association pushes a million-dollar fund drive for a community center. A Summer show is planned as the first event with auditions for amateurs for the August 14 performance on the Hayes hotel roof garden at 64th Street and Uni.
Irving Rudolph of the Chicago Boys' Club announced plans to convert the second floor of the Woodlawn police station at 6344 Harper Ave into a recreation center by next September. The project gains momentum as the Boys' Club and Woodlawn Business Men's Association act as co-sponsors. The effort aims to curb youth delinquency by providing trained recreation workers and facilities, with the local youths building partitions and equipment themselves.
The Public Works Administration approves a 3.15 million dollar grant for the Board of Education to construct classrooms gymnasiums and lunchrooms in the Southeast community. The project aims to improve school facilities and supply modern educational spaces.
Southeast communities will gain a new trade school and enhancements at Bowen high school and nearby campuses. The $3,150,000 Public Works Administration grant covers 45 percent of the trade school cost and funds additions like classrooms laboratories gyms and auditoriums with work slated to begin next fall.
