Ellen Lansburn of Clyde avenue resigns from the Visiting Nurses' Association after six years to join the army. Dorothy Bowman of Kimbark avenue owns a new portable radio as a prize from a radio question program. The brain teaser asked to name two storms in the Bible besides the flood. A contestant answered the storm that caused sailors to cast Jonah overboard and one of the plagues of Egypt. Guests gathered at Shoreland hotel for the wedding of Jean Marion Newart daughter of Harry B Newart Clyde avenue and Sidney Suchard of Crandon avenue. The bridegroom is the one man certain of the match. The bride is one of twin sisters with June Newart the other. At Oliver Allen and Keith Thompson’s wedding the Rev. O B Allen of Gresham Methodist church officiated and the bride’s mother played the processional and recessional.
The records note a August Coles County marsh fire that lasted into April with ash layers measuring 15 inches. It also mentions a 1833 Winter Round Prairie wedding in Wayne County where men wore store clothes and blue jeans while women wore calico dresses. Frank Scherette a 30 year old electrician at Inland Steel drowned after a fall from his motorboat on Pine Lake near LaPorte Indiana. His fiancé Jean Walker 22 described the accident as the clutch jammed and a failed turn led to his plunge. His body was recovered 12 hours later with a skull fracture noted by the coroner. He leaves parents a brother and two sisters. They had planned marriage in the fall. The couple had been on a favorite outing when tragedy struck.
Alderman Arthur G. Lindell plans to urge Chicago council action to authorize neighborhood redevelopment corporations and appoint a city redevelopment commission to supervise them. The measure mirrors a recently enacted Illinois bill, demands adherence to the Chicago Plan, and allows private companies to condemn property after 60 percent is acquired by negotiation.
Housewives who answer the door should ask to see the collector with credentials issued Friday by the Chicago Commission on National Defense and Mayor Edward J. Kelly. A masked armed youth with a red mustache robbed the South Gate garage at 721 Exchange Ave after failing to find cash in the register. He ordered an attendant to fetch a car and drove off in it, later abandoning the vehicle undamaged behind Yates Ave near 71st St. The car belonged to Mrs. Agnes C. Elmstrom of 721 Crandon Ave and two attendants, Edward Braxton and Arthur Hike, were ordered to walk north on Exchange Ave.
An old city guide advises planning a visitor itinerary for Cousin Clara. It lists major paid and free events from August 2 to September 1 near Soldier Field, Lakefront concerts, and various sports and festival happenings, plus landmark sights like the Academy of Sciences and Adler Planetarium in Lincoln Park.
Alderman Roy E. Olin reports readiness to start a $600000 project to build a viaduct under the Sincs Central and Nickleplate rails at 83rd street and Anthony avenue and to widen and pave Ellis to Dorchester avenues. State approval and $100000 railroad contribution are in place, with city funds from the state motor fuel tax. Contracts prepared but bids not sought. Olin pressed Oscar B. Hewitt for action after ten years of effort.
Earl Parks 26 pled guilty to murdering Lawrence Murphy in Jackson park during an attempted holdup May 21 and received the death sentence with execution set for October 24. Two accomplices, William Lee 20 and Charles Hill 23, were sent to prison for 30 and 25 years respectively. Parks also admitted killing Gustave Lindbloom during a separate holdup. Bernard Sawicki, 19, faces trial August 20 for the murder of Policeman Charles Speaker in Jackson park June 30. Judge Niemeyer set the date after testimony on Sawicki's competence.
Twelve local draft boards across the Southeast side report August quotas totaling 199 men, down 44 from July’s 243. The four wards the 6th 7th 8th and 10th received August calls with board No 10 listing 23 men for August 5.
William Francis Morey son of Mr and Mrs Richard Morey 2016 Euclid Avenue is among the first Southeast side volunteers in the 21 year old group registered July 1 He just completed his third year at Drake University majoring in physical education and English a star on the track team undefeated in cross country meets Draft Board No 12 says he will likely be included in the August 4 call.
In the 7th ward and 8th ward, multiple boards reported numbers and dates for draftees including 28 men on August 5 and August 7 times. New 21 year old registrants signed July 1 will not be called before September, unless they volunteer for August. Local boards expected to post up to date lists showing second group draftees in the Washington lottery order. The five top men among the new registrants are named in the opening lines.
Bernard Gross of the Stony Island Merchants association announced a renewed push for stop and go lights at the 168th Street and Stony Island Avenue intersection. Petitions will circulate to aldermen in wards six and seven as traffic grows heavy on the state highway with trucks and park traffic increasing danger to pedestrians and children.
