Fall Celebrations Planned for Southeast Gateway Opening

South Area council discussed fall ceremonies marking the opening of the Southeast Gateway from 83rd Street and South Shore to the state line at 106th Street Indianapolis Boulevard. Plans include grandstands on 83rd and South Shore, participation by civic and business groups from East Chicago Hammond Whiting and Gary, and a date after the American Legion convention to let bands join. New officers were elected for the South Area council of the Chicago Motor Club with Roy F Healy named chairman.

Stony Island extension opened as Calumet area develops

The $1 250 000 Stony Island extension from 95th to 120th streets will be opened with a celebration in about three weeks. Gov Henry Horner and Major Edward J Kelly expected at ribbon cutting. date to be set after Springfield delays. Aldermen Lindell and Rowan lead planning with Chicago Motor Club and civic groups backing the event. The project marks a key step in a three year plan to turn Lake Calumet into a major industrial area, providing 1 453 acres of waterfront site and spurring regional manufacturing growth.

Hold Funeral Services for Dr. Fred J. Kraus

Funeral services were held for Dr. Fred J. Kraus 37 a well known South Side physician. He died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday evening while driving his wife, daughter, and two friends home from a picnic. He is survived by his widow Esther Kraus and daughter Harriet.

Biographical Sketch of Alderman Thomas J Daley

Thomas J Daley, Seventh ward alderman, reflects on a life helping people from banks to public service. Since 1933 he won election by 1500 votes, re elected in 1935, and claims he simply likes the job. His projects include school additions, Rainbow Beach upgrades, safer streets, eight softball fields, and a leveled park area. He pushed for sewer improvements on 74th street and a high school at 76th and Bennett, plus bus routes on 71st and 83rd streets as part of a broader effort to keep the community clean and safe.

Crowley Dies In Basement Fire At Home

Alexius J Crowley 27 year old auctioneer burned to death when his basement cot caught fire likely from a cigarette after he retired to the basement to escape the heat. Firemen found his body as they extinguished flames. Wife and two of three children upstairs unharmed. Funeral held at St Philip Nerichurch. Burial Mount Olivet. Surviving are Mrs Crowley and children Alexios Jr six Joan three Phyllis ten.
