93rs Hold Exposition Outing at Jackson Park

More than 200 South Side residents who were employes or concessionaires at the 1893 Columbian Exposition gathered in Jackson Park for a 1957 reminiscence outing. Members of the 93rs wore 1893 garb and recalled the World’s Fair as they toasted 1893 with residents including Mrs. Gertrude Bestow and Mrs. Marie Domke among others.

Parks Day Camps In For Chicago Children

Operation Chicago Park District runs day camps for ages eight to twelve in 56 parks citywide. Camps run 9 30 am to 4 30 pm Monday through Friday with some parks offering afternoon sessions for parent participation. Registration at nearest park with a parent present. Southeast area parks include Bessemer Calumet Mann Tuley Russell Square and South Shore parks.

Mobile Unit To Tour Southeast Chicago

Mayor Daley’s mobile unit will tour the Southeast area next week to gather resident opinions. It will stop at multiple intersections from July 15 to July 17, collecting troubles, complaints, problems and praise for study by the Mayor’s office.

Loo Will Tour Parks With Perkins Traveling Zoo Visit

The Perkins Traveling Zoo visits Chicago park camps this summer led by park puppeteer Jack Mulqueen and curator Chief Whirling Thunder. Events include Calumet park July 29 morning and Bessemer park July 29 evening, Tuley park July 30 morning, Avalon park August 2 morning, and South Shore park August 7 evening, with both figures at Avalon and South Shore on July 17.

Vacation Time At Long Last For Happy Southeast Kids

More than two dozen thousand Southeast students celebrated the end of the Spring term as graduation week swept 10 150 high school seniors and 16 201 eighth graders through ceremonies. City teachers colleges and night schools awarded dozens more. Summer programs and camps were arranged by YMCA and other groups to keep youths active with sports trips and crafts while Traffic Chief McGuire urged drivers to watch for children at play during vacation period.

South Chicago opens first free parking lot for shoppers

South Chicago Shopping Center leaders unveil a free two hour lot at E 93rd and South Chicago Ave, for 100 cars under a deal with property owner Phil Cullen. Tickets are validated by member stores of the Chamber of Commerce and billed to those stores.

Public Wins In Battle To Regain Land

The Army returns three acres of Jackson park land near E 63rd Street and Lake Michigan to the Chicago Park District. The site, previously used for an ammunition building, will be torn down and landscaped at Army expense.
