Betty Hemingway visiting Coles Avenue sister-in-law plans to return home in the Fall. Artist Jack Bergeson from East 77th Street paints a vivid portrait of brown-eyed Jule Ryba of the North Side who will become Mrs. Bergeson on August 11.
Scores of civic and judicial leaders attended the funeral at Oak Woods chapel for former Judge Samuel H Trude who died after a ten day illness. He served 24 years on the Municipal court, was re elected in 1920 1926 and 1932 and practiced law 25 years. He was born near Grand Ridge Illinois and educated at Knox college Northwestern university law school. Mrs Nellie Trude died in 1910. Continued on Page 7.
Sunny weather drew many Southsiders to Fish Lake Indiana when Barthel Woods a new 70 homesite subdivision at the Economist Summer colony opened to the public for the first time. Representatives on hand answered queries about the colony and showed lots in Barthel Woods where homesites are larger. Regular sections retain the $78 price while Barthel Woods lots are higher, with $10 down and $3 monthly installments in most sections. A one year Southeast Economist subscription at $1.50 is required to secure the low price. Purchasers gain lakeside club membership and beach, park, pier, and other recreational privileges at South town Beach.
Tho m McAn shoe store at 1321 East 63rd Street was robbed between 2:00 and 6:30 AM Monday. Thieves took 244 pairs of shoes rubbers socks and ties valued at 800. Entry likely via skylight then rear door. Store manager Truman Moore was away.
Two Southeast side women were robbed at noon Monday in a daylight holdup outside Mrs. Colnen’s home. The attackers fled in a licenseless car after taking about $60 and rings valued at $2,500. Officers search the area with no arrests.
City hall hears curb to curb debate as 20 civic groups weigh in on a 1942 fare freeze and 162 million dollar eight year modernization plan. Southeast side residents oppose bus routes on Yates and Oglesby Aves while KG Kraft and Alderman Daley push removal of Yates route from the proposal.
A local thief took a Wings bicycle from 13 year old Ernest Krause on the Southeast side. Ernest, an eighth grade student at Phil Sheridan, saved for months to buy the $27 red blue bike. He was last seen near 79th street and Cottage Grove avenue and spotted later at a sandwich shop at 79th and Ingle Side. Police at Grand Crossing are asked to help recover the light red and blue bike to return to Ernest, who mostly uses his earnings to help at home.
William Whelen a 28 year old Southeastide school teacher died when the plane he piloted stalled and crashed into Eagle Lake near Kansasville Wisconsin last Friday evening. Passenger Robert Fortune suffered a broken leg and arm. Whelen taught woodcraft at Hancock Vocational School and was active in St Bride church groups. Funeral services were held at St Mary church Kansasville. Surviving relatives include his mother sister and brother.
The South Shore Community council acts in absence of President Stephen V Banksley appointing a three member committee led by John P Quigley to study a proposed 75th street bus route switch to ardst amid ongoing traction ordinance review. The meeting also addressed trailer camp removal efforts and zoning issues.
Gordon McIntosh a 79 year old resident of the South side died at his home Sunday after a short illness. He was born in Dunkeld Scotland and came to the area in 1871. He served five years in the army fighting Indians earning medals for marksman. He later ran a lumber business and retired. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Schrumpf Mrs Lenoch Mrs Dunne and two sons Donald and Meryle. Burial was in Mt Hope Cemetery after services at 7918 South Park Ave.
The city submits a plan to build an 18 foot wide dike across Lake Calumet north end at 110th street to reclaim about 300 acres for an airport and 160 acres for a federal aviation research lab. WPA labor would fill with silt and garbage over up to a year, with possible slag fill if needed. The project, costing about 25000, relies on garbage disposal savings and awaits City Council approval.
A 35 year old housewife Mrs David Jeffery and 19 year old Hirsch high school graduate Edward Bryan died in separate weekend automobile crashes. Jeffery, riding with her husband, was fatally struck at 75th street and Stony Island avenue and died at Jackson Park hospital. Bryan, returning from a Waupaca weekend with Lowell Saiberg, was fatally injured near Oshkosh and died en route to New London. Funeral rites and inquests were held for both, with Clark charged in Jeffery case.
