Hoenselaar earned it for a talk at the April 29 meeting, where he introduced Sidney R. Montague, a former Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman, who spoke on The Great North Road.
Mrs Elizabeth Moss aged 56 residing at 1408 Be Marquette Road received a serious head injury after slipping and falling while bathing a neighbor's 20 month old infant in the neighbor's apartment at the same address Monday night.
The Southeast Economist reprints a War Department pocket guide on Australia for soldiers, noting Australians eat abundant beef and lamb with little greenery, drink beer and tea, and differ in dining habits. It highlights hot dog like snacks, outback fare, and sports culture including tennis, cricket, and Australian Rules football with rough crowds.
The City plan commission advisory board unanimously urged financing postwar housing with private capital to avoid restricting re employment. Leo T. Heid proposed attracting insurance firms and investors to redevelop blighted areas and to learn from private housing projects in other cities. Heid noted war housing subsidies and materials limits hinder private investment while existing projects remain expensive for the federal government.
Staff Sgt John D Skall 22 and Pfe Maurice Smith 23 listed killed in action in Europe and Aleutians. Skall a Liberator tail gunner was shot down March 18 over Vegesack Germany. Smith killed May 27 on Attu. Skall had 23 bombing raids and was recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf clusters. Smith served 15 months in Alaska before the Aleutians deployment.
Tulia A Baker retires today after 20 years at Woodlawn branch and as regional director of Chicago Public Library Southside district. A life member of the American Library Association and former Illinois Library Association president, she also led district No. 2 of the Illinois Federation of Women’s Clubs and remains active in local civic groups.
Seaman first class Henry L. Gadbaw has returned from the Aleutians and visits his wife and seven children at 853 Calumet. He recalls boot camp at Great Lakes, duty in American and Asiatic waters, and battles with enemy subs near Attu.
Thomas Blanchfield, manager of the Internal Revenue branch office at Cottage Grove, will speak to the Woodlawn Business Men's Association at noon Tuesday July 13 in the Hayes hotel at 64th street and University. Attendees may ask questions about filling tax forms and related employer concerns.
Rev. Percy Billings retires as pastor of Kenwood New Jerusalem Church after a 53 year ministry across five countries. He served in England and Scotland six years, Australia six years, Portland Maine and Cleveland, then Toronto 1905 to 1908 before settling in the United States.
In Woodlawn the Waac recruitment drive starts Monday July 12 as part of a nationwide effort to reach 150000 officers. Lt Hastie directs Chicago recruitment and notes Waacs free 225000 battle trained men for front lines, while Barbara Rodery calls for Woodlawn women to contribute to victory and bolster American manpower.
Julian Carl aged 59 died from a heart attack at the corner of 63rd and Green streets in Englewood last Wednesday night. He was known to Southtown children as Santa Claus from the L Fish Furniture store and also served Santa at the Chicago City Bank and other organizations. Funeral services were held at 3 pm Saturday at the Irving Boulevard chapel with burial in Wunder's Cemetery.
On the 64th Street Southeast holiday weekend residents can attend a two day event lineup. Sunday features a Battle of Africa fireworks display at Soldier Field starting 7 p.m. and a Waves Marines and Spars parade followed by a circus headlined by Seldon the Stratosphere Man. Monday includes a military pageant patriotic musical show and street dance on 64th Street between Minerva and Woodlawn Aves in Avalon Park.
Sixty three Woodlawn club youths depart from Union Station to Chicago Boys' Club camp at Winona Lake Indiana. Seventeen stay eight weeks while the rest return July 13. In total 350 Chicago boys from seven branches attend. Aged five and a half to 15, twenty others left last Saturday to assist as camp leaders.
