A Chicago card game swindle tale recalls Alf the country lad fleeced in a seven card stud scam. Alf, heavily guarded by cattle profits, fell into a no limit later and raised stakes as two men manipulated the pot. The scam unfolded across nights at Chicago markets with unfamiliar players.
The first large drive for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis kicks off with birthday balls nationwide. In Chicago the Palmer House hosts a major ball with unannounced top entertainment and a prominent orchestra. tickets $5, hundreds bought. The Trianon on Cottage Grove will donate proceeds with two orchestras billed for continuous dancing. A third benefit occurs at Hines Memorial Hospital for Veterans tomorrow evening with a dance and card party for Legion posts and veterans groups.

Thousands of winter sports enthusiasts can participate or spectate at the first annual Jackson Park Ice Carnival sponsored by the American Legion posts. The South Area council of the Chicago Motor Club proposed widening South Shore Drive from 67th to 83rd streets but Chicago Park District shelved the plan. The district favors a proposed super parkway from Jackson Park to the Indiana state line, a brainchild of Park Supt George Donoghue and traffic engineer Otto Jelinek. Sunday afternoon a Southeast Pioneer joined his wife in death, seven days after Mrs Bertha Wegner died. Gustav Wegner, 80, longtime retiree, passed away after a monthlong illness that became acute following his wife’s funeral. The Wegners, living at 6222 Ingleside, cared for each other in their final years and were kept close by three sons, Paul among them.
Bret Campbell aged 62 of 229 East 74th Street was injured when he stepped from the curb onto South Park Avenue near 75th Street just after midnight Monday and was struck by a car driven by Herbert Brown 31 of 9300 Indiana Avenue. Brown stopped and, with another motorist, took Campbell to Jackson Park Hospital for treatment of a scalp laceration and a bruised hip.
Woodlawn's 1908 crop of babies brings total reported to 27 as of last week. Guests of honor at the association banquet February 21 will mark its 30th anniversary. Names include McCluggage of Peoria and Veral Porter, with many others listed by birth date and residence.
Southeast report on Mt Carmel High School in Ohio describing the 960 students, 55 teachers, and 1924 rebuilding across Dante Ave. It notes youthful instructors aligned with Carmelite philosophy and Rev Theodore Hatton O Carm as principal, currently ill in hospital.

Announcement last week confirmed a new Burnside police car as part of Alderman Mulcahy’s 1938 program. An ordinance directed public works to erect stop signs at 79th Street and Rhodes Avenue. A traffic survey for 73rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue was arranged to assess stop and go lights.
Eight youths ages 17 to 24 were detained at Grand Crossing police station for investigation into more than 35 robberies, with five named among the arrestees and four other teens sent to juvenile custody earlier this week. Detectives Doyle Creighton Walsh and Dorgan identified Donald Carty as seized after recognition in a passing car, part of a long pursuit tied to a gang active at 42nd street and Dobson avenue.
