Joseph Galica, 56, of 7158 Yates Ave., was fatally injured last Thursday night when struck by a westbound IC train at 71st St. and Oglesby Ave. He died three hours later at South Shore Hospital. A coroner's jury ruled the death accidental. The crossing gates were down. Police say he attempted to cross after waiting for an eastbound train, slipped on ice, and was struck as the westbound train approached. Earlier similar accidents prompted a call for an Illinois Commerce Commission study of the South Chicago branch. Track fencing costs were discussed.
S. V. Ronksley was installed as president of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce at a dinner and officer installation last night at the Southmoor hotel. Dr. W. S. Kelly presided as installing officer. New officers include John F. Jones secretary, E. J. Donnellan treasurer, J. Leslie Rosenblum vice president for 71st Street, E. G. Clem vice president for 75th Street, Elmer A. Johnson vice president for 79th Street, Leslie N. Price vice president for Stony Island Avenue, Norman N. Eiger counsel, and E. J. Schackenberg advisory counsel. New directors include O. H. Hargrove for 71st Street, Mrs. Rose Browne for 75th Street, E. S. Schlosberg for 79th Street, and F. W. Patterson outgoing president for Stony Island Avenue.
Southeast Side movie actress June Travis, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Grabiner, visits Chicago during a vacation from Hollywood. She recalls Wadsworth and Parkside grammar school days, enjoys the cold Chicago weather, and lists possible travel to Sun Valley Idaho before continuing her stay.
Tomorrow night the 10th ward Regular Democratic organization meets at 9138 Houston Ave to endorse Mayor Edward J. Kelly for re nomination. Speakers include John J. Rooney James Danaher Ald. William A. Rowan chairs. State's Attorney Thomas J. Courtney plans a personal speaking campaign in the 18th and 17th wards at the Sabina Community Center and Englewood Masonic temple.
The Economist proposes a city plan change at City Council judiciary committee meeting to make each neighborhood plan legally binding when enacted into the Chicago Plan. William H. McDonnell, publisher of the Economist, argues such plans would ensure surer reception from outlying neighborhoods and better address Chicago's blighted areas. The idea envisions each neighborhood having its own detailed plan that fits the overall city plan like puzzle pieces.
T J Phillips of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Chicago spoke on Americas Capacity to Produce and Consume at the Crossing-Chatham Chamber meeting in Steven s hall on 79th street and Cottage Grove. The talk was part of a Brookings Institute sponsored economics lecture series. Plans for the annual window dressing contest were announced, to be held just before Easter, and the banquet is set for February 12 at the South Side Swedish Club on Ridgeland Avenue.
The South Shore Junior Chamber of Commerce will nominate and elect officers for the new year at its Sunday meeting in the Southmoor hotel at 67th street and Stony Island avenue. An outline of the year’s program and the next Town Hall date will be announced. Andrew Murphy, president, invites local youths to attend.
Two Southside residents aged in their nineties celebrate birthdays and recount a century of history. Frances Ann Cunningham, 90, recalls Civil War to American growth while biking daily, and Richard Dodson, 92, shares Civil War memories and the Chicago Fire as he reflects on a long lifetime from Pennsylvania to Iowa to Chicago.
The seventh annual convention of the National Association of Tobacco Distributors honored two Southeast side brunettes. Kay Morrison, 28 Champlain, won the American Tobacco Queen title with Gerry G. Goldberg as runner up. Judges cited Morrison as best typifying Pocahontas, the industry symbol, noting Pocahontas herself was a brunette.
Plans for the interdenominational fellowship dinner in the South Shore district advance at a Sunday meeting in the South Shore temple. The February 22 event at Bryn Mawr Community church hall aims to host up to 400, with possible guest speaker Lord Bertram Russell. Cooperative churches and synagogues include Avalon Community church and South Shore temple among many others.
George Ball of 545 East 80th Street suffered a fractured right arm and a forehead cut after stepping from his car into a grease pit at a filling station on East 78th Street. He was taken to Jackson Park Hospital for treatment after the noon incident last Saturday.
With last Tuesday the filing deadline neared for aldermanic petitions as 27 candidates from four Southeast wards joined the race for February 28 elections. Incumbents sought re election in all four wards while candidates in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th wards listed opponents including John F. Healy and Thomas J. Daley with rivals named across each ward. Next Monday is the final day to file objections and February 8 to file withdrawals.
Funeral services for Frank Stumpf 40 owner of the Gables Food and Liquor store will be held at St. Margaret church at 10 this morning. A coroner's jury ruled accidental death after his car skidded on icy pavement at 79th and Pulaskird and he died from a skull fracture. He is survived by his widow and three sons Charles Joseph and Frank. Burial in St. Mary cemetery.
Mrs Peter Wolter of 7220 Bennett Ave has been appointed co-chairman of the public relations committee of the Illinois Library Association. Announcement was made by Helen Babcock vice president librarian of the South Shore branch library. The association will mark its 48th anniversary with a convention in Chicago or Rockford.
