Opera star Rise Stevens will give a February 2 concert at 8 15 p m in the South Shore temple 7215 S Jeffrey Ave with a 1250 seat capacity. Temple board chairman Harry L Madorin says funds from the show will erase prior obligations and 50 temple members sponsor the event with proceeds going to the temple. A reception will follow in the social room of the community house.
Five children from the Eugene Skonicki family had tonsillectomies performed Thursday at St. George hospital and went home Friday. Two are twins, all attend local schools including St Michaels and kindergarten in Sullivan district. The parents plan to remove the others’ tonsils when age appropriate and the children will return to classes once recovered.
City crackdown targets retailers selling obscene magazines to youths. Lt. Edward O Malley says warrants expected as new ordinance bans exhibiting or selling to under 17 any material aimed to arouse sexual desire, with courts to resolve disputes. Police will patrol districts to enforce the law. The OP Task Force reports 799 district visits last year, with arrests for drunken driving, burglary, auto theft, robbery, numbers slips, and stolen merchandise.
Mrs. Mac Nolan 69 lifelong South Side resident and former Illinois Bell executive died at home after 45 years in personnel for the Chicago company. Mayor Daley announced the installation of 324 mercury vapor lamps in South Chicago and along South Shore Drive to E 79th Street and along South Avenue O between Brainerd Ave and 114th Street. The lamps cost 226000 total with separate estimates of 112000 and 114000 for the two sections.
Ground will be broken for the Susan B Anthony School at the corner of E 98th Street and S Torrence today at 9 15 am local time.
George Washington school at E 114th St and S Avenue O will open February 4 as the city’s first to combine kindergarten through high school in one building. The $3 million complex will start with elementary grades and expand yearly to reach a 1,200 capacity, with a projected first graduation around 1958 or 1959. Principal Thomas Coffey notes the plan relieves enrollment pressure at nearby Ad dams and Geilistel, while a partial opening includes art rooms, a gym, library, and cafeteria.
South Chicago will gain a cashier operated off street lot for about 220 cars after city council approved initial land parcels last Friday. Alderman Emil Pacini said land west of Exchange Avenue between 92nd and Q streets will be cleared this spring with several buildings to be torn down. Local officials anticipate boosted business and traffic safety with monthly rentals and meter revenue noted by chamber president Riley Clark.

Six Southeast high schools will award diplomas to 16,000 city seniors next Wednesday and Thursday. Ceremonies begin at 8 p.m. at Bowen Hirsch South Shore Carver Chicago Vocational and Hyde Park high schools.
Seventh Ward Independent Voters of Illinois will hold a meeting Thursday January 31 at 8 p.m. in the Bryn Mawr Community Church located at 7000 S Jeffery. The notice invites residents to attend and participate.
The Illinois Central plea for a 15 to 20 percent fare increase faces a full Illinois Commerce Commission committee on Monday January 28. Walter E. Wiles for the IC Commuters association and Earl E. Meisenbach for the city oppose the hike, arguing urban riders shoulder the burden and that higher fares will drive riders to other transport. The commission's ruling could take effect around March 1 if approved.
Funeral services for John S. Pietruszka 79 will be held at St. Florian's Church at 10 a.m. Saturday with a procession from the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Interment follows at Holy Cross Cemetery. Survived by six sons Anthony John Stanley Walter Joseph and Andrew, two brothers and 17 grandchildren.
