School Children Pay Tribute to Jack Hagen Killed by I C Train
Sixth grade students from St. Laurence School served as pallbearers and attended funeral services for 12 year old Jack Hagen who was killed when struck by an Illinois Central southbound train near Dorchester and Dante avenues. An inquest returned an accidental death verdict with testimony from the engineer who said a warning bell rang as the boy ran toward the tracks and books flew as the collision occurred. The boy was identified by a train conductor who found his name in a schoolbook.

Two Young Men Held for Auto Theft and Robberies
Two young men, one facing grand jury action and one on parole, were charged with robbery of two gas stations and an auto theft on January 12. Woodlawn officers Barry and O Neill chased the maroon car after midnight January 13, near 63rd street and Maryland avenue, leading to a crash with Thomas Brothers, 19, and a fleeing suspect identified as Ralph Kru.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smart of 8051 Manistee Avenue are the parents of a baby girl, Dawn Elaine, born January 11 at Illinois Central Hospital. Dawn weighed six pounds, 12 ounces. Mr. Smart directs the Jackson Park Bird sanctuary and Mrs. Smart serves as secretary treasurer of the Woodlawn Women's auxiliary of the Izaak Walton league, the first women’s unit formed in the state. Seventy nine men form the Southeast side quota from wards 6 to 10, with thirty seven volunteers among the inductees last Monday and Tuesday. The Chicago induction station at the 122nd Field Artillery armory will close from Tuesday to February 10, delaying about 1700 local draftees. Woodlawn league outlines covenants drive and tavern curb
The Woodlawn Property Owners' league met at the Hayes hotel with nearly 200 members. The board's 1940- report, presented by Leo Heid, highlighted restrictive covenants, defense against anti covenant laws, and plans for a new covenant re signing area east of Cottage Grove. The gathering also discussed Washington Park covenants and a push to reduce taverns on 63rd Street and improve parking. A federation of neighborhood associations was proposed to uphold covenants.
