Early Monday a two cycle gasoline engine on a WPA project at 74th Street and Stony Island Avenue caught fire. WPA watchman and city hoisting engineer Fred Stengel and William Williams were burned minorly as flames singed eyes and eyelashes. They were treated at Jackson Park Hospital.

Mrs. H Wirt Butler of 6848 Cornell ave reports a burglar forced entry between Saturday and Thursday last week while she was away. A ruby heirloom ring, a diamond ring, and a diamond brooch were taken, entry gained through a rear transom. Woodlawn police are investigating the burglary.

Michelson, leading since 1929, outlines a wide curriculum from college prep to practical shops and home arts, with 3,250 students served.
Fredrick Siebert a 34 year old man from 6450 Kenwood Ave was struck at 63rd Street and Kenwood and left unconscious. Woodlawn police say the driver fled the scene. He was rushed to TinHoig Central Hospital at 5800 Stony Island Ave with a skull fracture and head lacerations where doctors reported his condition as fair.
John Hayes leads Woodlawn Business Men’s Association in a city wide search for the 1908 birth cohort to honor at the 30th anniversary banquet. The program opens with the installation of officers and committee appointments including J M Earle as business improvement chair and Homer L Davenport as legislative chair with Mrs Minnie L Ray heading the shopping committee.
Military services were held at Donnellan funeral chapel for Andrew F Bird age 64 of 7507 Luella Ave who died of a heart attack in his sleep. He served in the Spanish American War and belonged to Bob Evans post Spanish War Veterans. He resided here 11 years and worked 20 years for a railroad. Survivors include widow Lillian, two sisters Ella Quinn and Jane Lappin of Chicago, and four brothers Steve John William and James Bird of Grand Rapids. After services the body was sent to Grand Rapids for burial.

Burglars broke into Louis A. Donn Finance Company at 7126 Stony Island Ave smashing a plate glass window with a brick and stole five table model radios valued at 100 dollars. Grand Crossing police were notified by employees who found the loss on Monday morning. A reward is offered for information leading to the arrest of the culprit.
The Chicago Park District will construct a pedestrian footbridge at 67th Street and South Shore Drive after Alderman Thomas J. Daley recommended the project. New designs are being developed to fit landscape and budget limits, with construction planned for next summer. Daley also urged traffic lights at 71st Street and South Shore Drive and signals at 75th 79th 78rd Streets and Yates to reduce collisions.
Representatives from parent teacher church and civic groups will hold a mass meeting at the South Shore Y M C A 2320 East 75th Street Tuesday at 8 p.m. to press for a new high school for South Shore. The All South Shore High School committee organized to present demands to the Board of Education notes South Shore’s 70 000 population and 3 600 high school age children with 1 000 more added yearly to Hyde Park Bowen and Hirsch.
Max Schmidl was installed as president at a Fairfax hotel dinner meeting. New officers include John Y. Browne as first vice president and A S Scott as second vice president. Directors named are W T Blackwell and others. Committees and youth activity programs were announced, focusing on membership drive and youth sports to curb juvenile delinquency.
Despondent over poor health Fred Weyhmuller 63 hanged himself with a steam pipe in the basement of his two flat at 7642 Langley Ave. A coroner's jury ruled death by self action due to hanging. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 pm and burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. surviving are his widow a daughter Mrs Max Fietze and two grandchildren Lorene and Shirley.
Hyde Park Hirsch and Bowen High Schools schedule diploma exercises next week for graduating seniors. Officials announce ceremonies, seating plans, and campus locations for the events.
More than 700 students will finish academic careers next week in the Southeast community at Bowen Hirsch and Hyde Park high schools. Hirsch holds a senior breakfast Tuesday with Jane Callner in charge. Hyde Park hosts the commencement Wednesday with two valedictorians Robert Brown and James Smith delivering speeches alongside May Rydberg and Reeva Navy.
