A pair of local con artists dupe a prominent Chicago lawyer by simulating a Philadelphia office and a legal dispute with a fictitious John Doe. The scheme hinges on a staged lawsuit and layered correspondence, drawing the lawyer into a costly “settlement” arrangement as the con unravels.
Nathan J Landauer, a German born nonagenarian who campaigned for Lincoln and remained engaged in current events, died at his daughter Stella Kohn's home in Peru Indiana at age 98. He came to the U S in 1855 and served briefly in the Civil War before illness limited him.
Mrs. William Clark of 6547 Kimbark avenue died at 74 after a stroke triggered by news that her daughter was critically ill in Dayton. Survived by husband William, another daughter, two grandsons, a granddaughter, and a few extended relatives. Funeral Saturday at Yunn's chapel with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Plans for the annual banquet of the Grand Crossing Chatham Chamber of Commerce were unveiled by James Phillips, with the event set for Sunday February 13 at the South Side Swedish Club. The meeting also addressed traffic safety at 73rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and upcoming spring promotions.
Capt. Patrick Brady of Grand Crossing police announced the arrest of Alvin Cross, 26, as a confessed main suspect in a nine month burglary wave. Cross confessed to more than twenty thefts totaling about 25000. He was arraigned in Felony court with over twenty complaints. Detectives Walsh Kelleher Coan and Byrnes led the case.
C. A. Shantz, newly elected president, urged support in a campaign after calling present facilities "140 years behind times" and appealing for improvements. He criticized current infrastructure and asked for aid from supporters and the community.
C A Shantz, newly elected president of the South Side Federation of Improvement Associations, opened a campaign for a new Sanitary District trunkline sewer to replace 46 years of outdated facilities. The federation seeks a federal appropriation to finance plans already drawn for the Morgan Street trunk line from 39th to 87th streets, with arterial sewers branching.
Leo T. Heid president of the Woodlawn Property Owners league will review 1937 achievements and outline plans for the coming year at the annual dinner and meeting Tuesday January 25 in the First Presbyterian church. A three act play Woodlawn Vows will highlight the program for an audience of 300 plus with invitations sent to Gov. Henry Horner Sen. James Hamilton Lewis and Mayor Edward J. Kelly.
Joseph Tyde rek, 8218 South Shore or, was attacked on his way home from work near 84th street and Commercial avenue. He was struck unconscious by a strong-arm robber, robbed of $5, and required four stitches for a head wound at South Chicago hospital after being treated at home. No suspect description was obtained.
Alderman John F. Healy of the Sixth Ward presents a 1938 plan focusing on resurfacing Woodlawn from 63rd to 67th streets, and improvements on Kimbark Kenwood and University avenues. He seeks state funds with Alderman Cusack for Woodlawn's shopping artery resurfacing and proposes rehab of Scott and Paul Revere elementary schools, new playgrounds, and use of vacant lots across from Sexton School as a playground with Board of Education support.

Treacherous streets left ten people injured after multiple car crashes this week in a Southeast neighborhood. Mrs. Karl Perkins, president of the West Pullman Junior Woman's Club, was struck while crossing Cottage Grove Avenue near the 79th Street car line and rushed to Jackson Park Hospital with facial injuries and possible skull fracture. Passenger Henry Lindenberg suffered cuts from shattered glass when a car hit a parked vehicle on South Park Avenue. Dr. Frank A was the driver involved in the crash that contributed to the toll.
Woodlawn police investigated a burglary at 2040 E. Tist Street the raid occurred Friday night and the burglars escaped with socks shoes valued around 600 and a small floor safe containing nearly 50 in cash Merchandise and cash totaling about 650 were taken, according to store manager Henry C. George.
